Every great photographer starts by learning the basics.
Tonight at the DBYC Lourdes Youth Center, our young people and the Salesian Youth Media Team โ FIS were blessed to attend a Fundamentals of Photography Workshop facilitated by our guest speaker, Mr. Michael "Des" Ramos, a DBYC Lourdes alumni and now a professional photographer, based in Manila through the invitation of Rev. Fr. Keith J. Amodia, SDB.
Kuya Michael shared the foundation of photography by explaining the Exposure Triangle, ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed and how these three work together to create a great photograph. He also discussed aperture comparison, how shutter speed controls time, and how ISO controls the camera's sensitivity to light.
One of the lessons that truly stayed with us was when he said:
"In photography, there are two sides of the story, the photo and the caption."
Learning didn't end in the classroom. After the discussion, our participants went on a short photo walk, where they were challenged to apply what they had learned using different photography techniques such as the Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Frame Within a Frame, Point of View, and Light as the Subject.
Afterwards, everyone gathered to present their favorite photo, share the story behind it, and explain how they applied the techniques. It was inspiring to see that every image captured a unique perspective and reminded us that photography is not just about taking pictures it's about telling stories that words alone cannot express.
