SAINT SIMON STOCK
RELIGIOUS

Simon, an Englishman, was elected as one of the first Prior Generals of the Order and served during the difficult days of transition between hermits and friars. He died whilst on visitation of our friary at Bordeaux in the mid‑thirteenth century. He has been venerated in the Carmelite Order for his personal holiness and his devotion to Our Lady. A liturgical celebration in his honour was observed locally in the fifteenth century, and later extended to the whole Order. Shortly after the return of the friars to Aylesford a major relic of St. Simon was retuned to England by the Archbishop of Bordeaux.

Prayer

Father, you called St. Simon Stock to serve you in the brotherhood of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Through his prayers help us like him to live in your presence and to work for the salvation of the human family. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Optional Memorial

In the houses in Spain: Memorial

In a single celebration, both Orders of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel commemorate their martyrs who, in different places in Spain, bore witness to the faith before and during the long and bloody religious persecution for hatred of the faith (1936-1939). Father Angelus Mary Prat Hostench, O. Carm., was murdered with his confreres in Tárrega in 1936; Father Luke of St. Joseph Tristany Pujol, O.C.D., was slain with his confreres in Barcelona the same year. This memorial also includes the groups from Lleida, Tarragona, Toledo, Terrassa, Olot, and others. This multitude of bishops, diocesan priests, religious of various orders and lay people were beatified, in part by Pope Benedict XVI on October 28, 2007 (498 martyrs), and in part by Pope Francis on October 13, 2013 (522 martyrs).

From the Common of Several Martyrs

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God,
who granted the priests Blesseds Angelus Mary, Luke of Saint Joseph,
and their companions
the grace of reaching the summit of Mount Carmel through martyrdom,
grant, we pray, through their intercession,
that we may always live with wisdom and zeal,
by bearing witness to the kingly majesty of Christ.

Who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

A Life Formed in Mary: Why Carmel calls itself “completely Marian”

Directed to Christ and oriented to him, Carmel is also directed to Mary and oriented to her. “Completely Marian,” Totus marianus est, Carmelite authors have repeated throughout the centuries, and of all their titles none is dearer to the sons and daughters of Elijah than that of Brothers and Sisters of our Lady.

It is historically certain that the first hermits who retired to Mount Carmel made their center a chapel consecrated to our Lady, and from the time of the first Prior General, the Carmelites were called Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Thus devotion to Our Lady is seen to be one of their distinctive signs. Despite its historical inexactitudes, The Book of the Institution of the First Monks shows that the Order is dominated by two great figures which represent, on different levels, its ideal: Elijah and Our Lady.

At Carmel, what is true of our Lord is also true of Our Lady. Contemplative life advances by assimilation and union much more than by images, examples, and models. Preserving all due proportion, what we have said of Christ we repeat about Mary. If Carmelites do not strive to imitate Mary’s life in its historical details, they do find themselves quite naturally in deep harmony with her soul—and it is in this sense that they may be said to lead a “Mary-form” life.

MAY: Month of Our Blessed Mother

“She is more Mother than Queen.”
(Last Conversations, July 21, 1897)

Among all the pious exercises practiced during the month of May, there is none as ancient and as beautiful as the Month of Mary. A month that Holy Mother Church dedicates to the highest devotion to the Most Holy Virgin.

Practical Ways to Live the Blessed Month:

• Set up an altar to the Most Holy Virgin in your home, and decorate it with flowers.

• Go to the nearest church to pray the Holy Rosary and offer flowers to the Most Holy Mary.

• Consecrate yourself to the Most Holy Virgin Mary using the method of Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort.

• Sing pious hymns proper to this month.

• Spread devotion to the Most Holy Virgin.

• Organize a procession in your parish to honor and make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady.

• Pray the Holy Rosary with your family.

• Decorate your home with blue and white, the colors of Our Lady.

• Invoke Mary in your temptations and tribulations.

• Ask a priest to invest you with the scapular of Our Lady.

• Wear the Miraculous Medal.

• Join the confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or any other Marian confraternity, group, or association.

• Proclaim the Most Holy Virgin as Queen of your heart, your homeland, and your family.

• Take 15 minutes daily to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Most Holy Mary.

• Always carry with you a rosary or a holy card of Our Lady.

• Spread love for the Most Holy Virgin among children (You can dress them in white and take them to offer flowers).

• Enthrone an image of the Most Holy Virgin in your home.

• Decorate your street's facade with an image of Our Lady.

• Make small flower crowns and offer them to Our Lady daily.

• Pilgrimage to Marian shrines or churches.

• Whenever you pass before an image of the Most Holy Virgin, make a reverent bow and greet her with the Hail Mary.

• Sanctify Saturday as a day dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin.

• Observe fasts and penances in her honor.

• Honor Most Holy Mary with your virtues.

• Defend her against the constant attacks that blasphemers and Protestant heretics direct against her, simply because their pride and obstinacy have left them in such orphanhood that they cannot even see the Most Holy Virgin as their Mother.

All for the greater glory of God and His most pure Mother, the Most Holy Virgin Mary.

To our dearest Rev. Fr. Joey Mabborang, OCD,

Today, we honor not just your years of service, but the heart, wisdom, and prayerful guidance you have poured into the OCDS Sto. Niño de Cebu Community. As our Spiritual Assistant, you have been a shepherd, a mentor, and a living reflection of Carmel's silent, contemplative love.

Thank you for walking with us in formation, for celebrating the Eucharist with such reverence, and for patiently leading us closer to Christ through the Teresian charism. Your presence among us has been a grace that has shaped our community in ways words can hardly capture.

And now, just as we express our gratitude, we also celebrate with joyful hearts your election as the new Provincial Superior of the Order of Discalced Carmelites Philippine Province.

God is calling you to a wider mission to serve not only our community but the entire OCD Philippine Province. We give you our love and joy, knowing that your new position is part of God's greater plan.

May the Lord, whom you have served so faithfully, continue to bless you with strength, wisdom, and peace. The Sto. Niño de Cebu OCDS family will forever be your home. God bless you, Fr. Joey!
