The Gospel of Matthew represented Jesus as a teacher greater than Moses, since he placed an emphasis on his teachings. It shows Jesus's fulfillment of the Jewish scriptures and old testament prophecies (1:1; 5:17). The Gospel represents Jesus as the long waited Messiah and the King of Jews. He was also presented as the new Moses. As a teacher, he spoke five major speeches which is focused on the five great books of Moses, or also known as Pentateuch. It was stated that the most important speech Jesus delivered was his first speech, the Sermon on the Mount, where his moral teaching was emphasized. Not only did the disciples see Jesus as a mentor, but they saw him as Christ, the Messiah, as well as the Son of God. It is also stated that Jesus refers himself as the only Son of Man who came to serve and save that which was lost. In the Gospel, Jesus is represented as a lot of things. However, his disciples viewed his representation in their different views. The phrase, “Son of God” had also been mentioned several times. As we progress throughout the book, we can see that Jesus shows himself mighty as he performs many great miracles.

According to Matthew, the Gospel results as the emphasis of Christ's fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies (5:17) and his role as the lawgiver whose divine mission was repeatedly confirmed by miracles.

Matthew is a phenomenal work of literature, arranged in a way that presents Jesus as the ultimate Jewish hero: the Messianic son of David, the prophet who surpasses Moses, and the seed of Abraham that blesses all the nations.

After tracing the genealogy of Jesus back to Abraham, the evangelist mentions certain details related to the infancy of Christ that are not elsewhere recorded—e.g., St. Joseph’s perplexity on learning that Mary is pregnant, the homage of the Wise Men, the flight into Egypt to escape Herod’s soldiers, the massacre of the innocents, and the return of the holy family from Egypt. Matthew also describes the preaching of St. John the Baptist as the call of the Apostles, and major events in the public ministry of Jesus. The last section describes the betrayal, Crucifixion, burial, and Resurrection of Christ.
