GOD HAS PREPARED SOMETHING GREATER FOR YOU | “Whatever you are going through right now, do not define your life by it. Your pain is real, but it is not final. Your struggle is real, but it is not permanent. Because God has already prepared something greater for you."

SAINT ROSE OF LIMA, PRAY FOR US!

Saint Rose, obtain for us your lively faith that we may consider all people, things and events in the light of God. Pray, that we may be generous in making sacrifices of worldly things as you so wisely did. Help us to follow your example so that we may be more pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. Amen.

AVE MARIA! | Today, we celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a Holy Mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Alden John Baran at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Pedro Calungsod.

Today also marks the Patronal Fiesta in honor of Mary, Queen of the Visayas.

In his homily, Fr. Baran reflected on the humility of Mary, reminding the faithful that her queenship is rooted not in worldly power or greatness, but in her humble obedience, love, and complete trust in God. Her life teaches us that true greatness is found in humility and in faithfully saying “yes” to God’s will.

Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, pray for us!

GOD HAS PLANS FOR YOU | “We may not always understand God’s plans. We may not always agree. But God sees what we do not see. God knows what will protect us. God knows what will help us grow. God knows what will lead us to joy. Let us trust Him."

WHY IS THE VIRGIN MARY QUEEN OF HEAVEN AND EARTH?

1. She is the Mother of the King.
In the Davidic kingdom, the king's mother held an honored position known as the Queen Mother (gebirah, literally “great lady”). The queen was not normally the king's wife, but his mother.

A particularly clear example is Bathsheba, the mother of King Solomon. When she approached Solomon, he had a throne brought for her and honored her:

“Then the king stood to meet her, and bowed down to her; and he sat on his throne, and had a throne brought for the king’s mother.”
— 1 Kings 2:19

The king's mother could also present petitions to the king on behalf of others. This gives important biblical background to the Catholic understanding of Mary's maternal intercession.

2. Jesus is the promised Son of David.
The angel Gabriel announced to Mary that her Son would receive “the throne of his father David” and reign forever (Luke 1:32–33).

If Jesus is the eternal Davidic King, Mary is His mother—the Mother of the King. The Old Testament Queen Mother tradition therefore provides a biblical pattern for understanding Mary's queenship.

3. Mary herself appears in a royal setting.
In Psalm 45:9, the mother of the king is portrayed standing at the king's right hand:

“At your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.”

Catholic tradition has long seen this royal imagery as fitting the dignity of Mary, who is the Mother of Christ the King.

4. Her queenship points entirely to Christ.
Mary is not Queen because she possesses divine power independent of Jesus. Her queenship comes from her unique relationship with Christ. As the Mother of the King, she participates uniquely in His mission and continues to intercede for His people.

So, in simple terms:

In the Jewish Davidic tradition, the king's mother was honored as queen. Jesus is the eternal Son of David and King. Therefore, Mary, His Mother, is honored as Queen—not above Christ, but because she is the Mother of the King.

This is one of the beautiful biblical foundations behind the Church's celebration of the Queenship of Mary on August 22, following the Solemnity of her Assumption.

Our Lady Queen of Heaven and Earth, pray for us!
