Today, January 19, 2025, is the Solemnity of the Santo Niรฑo de Cebu.

The image of the Christ Child of Cebu was brought to the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan on 1521 and given as a gift to Queen Juana of Cebu the occasion of her baptism and those of hundreds of natives. Years later, in 1565, one of the men of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi found the image of the Santo Niรฑo unscathed in the ruins of a burnt house, which began the centuries-longb devotion to the Holy Child.

Since then, the Santo Niรฑo was loved, cherished, and treasured by the Filipino people throughout the centuries and up to this day, He has been the protector of the Filipino people and has become their source of protection, hope, and aid in times of need, especially in wars, tribulations, and sufferings.

In 1964, Pope Paul VI granted the image of the Santo Niรฑo de Cebu a ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, an honor given to three other images of the Christ Child around the world. The following year, he elevated the church where the image was enshrined into a Basilica, which we know today as Basilica Minore del Santo Niรฑo de Cebu.

The feast of the Santo Niรฑo is celebrated annually on the Third Sunday of January. It is this feast that marks the renowned Sinulog Festival, which celebrates centuries of faith and devotion to the Holy Child.

๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—น๐˜†

The Scriptures are "breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." (2 Tim 3:16) It is through the encouragement of scripture, that we might have hope (Romans 15:4) in Him whose words will not pass away. (Matthew 24:35) It is here where God comes and talks to us directly in His own words.

It is not enough, however, to read Scripture purely for information. Rather, Scripture is primarily meant for our transformation through prayer and meditation. The words of scripture should sink deep into our hearts, where our lives are continually molded by it, bringing us into an ever more deeper union with the Trinity, so that "it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." (Gal 2:20)

To meditate on Scripture, we may follow an ancient monastic way known as Lectio Divina. Here are the guidelines as suggested by a Trappist monk, Fr Thomas Keating:

(1) Prepare โ€“ Decide on what Scripture you want to meditate on. You may choose any of the readings from the Mass Lectionary. After you've decided, spend a few moments sitting quietly to prepare the mind and heart to hearing God's words.

(2) Read โ€“ Read the Scripture passage slowly and attentively to get the full gist of the reading. Listen carefully for a word or a phrase that attracts you the most.

(3) Reflect โ€“ Re-read the passage again and again. Reflect on the words and phrases that you've chosen. If it helps, you may journal your thoughts down. It is also good to memorize these words or phrases so that you may repeat it to yourself throughout the day as a reminder

(4) Respond โ€“ Out from your reflection, you respond to God. This is an opportunity for you to be in dialogue with God using the Scriptures. Again, if it helps, you may journal it down.

(5) Rest โ€“ Finally, now is the time for silent rest. Here, there is no reading, reflection, or any verbal prayer. It is just a time of pure silence, and pure awareness of the God who is inside of you and present in all things.

Make it a habit to do this everyday, for 15 - 30 minutes, preferably in the morning so that the foundation of your day will be the Word of God.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ

How often have we pondered the deep implications of the Incarnation? Was it merely a one-time event that took place 2000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent as God's "search and rescue" operation inside enemy territory to save a select few humans from damnation? Or did the Incarnation have a much wider and holistic effect in the grand universe which includes, among many ordinary things we take for granted, the flowers, the grass, the trees, the mountains, the stars, the birds, and the fishes? I argue for the latter.

Every year in Christmas Day, we often read from the prologue of St John's Gospel:

"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us." (John 1:14)

The Greek word used by John that is translared in English as "flesh" is "sarx" which is a generic and universal term for materiality or physicality, instead of referring to a single human body "soma". What this implies is that in the Incarnation, not only did Christ identify himself as a human being, but he also identified himself with ALL things material and visible. This is further backed up by modern Science which proved the interconnectedness of all life in the universe, and that human beings are not isolated beings, but are really just part of the Whole.

Therefore, we can see in the Incarnation the Universal Empathy of God โ€“ choosing to identify Himself with all the suffering and regeneration of every single material living thing in the Universe through His own Death and Resurrection. It is by this Divine Act that we know and are guaranteed that there is nothing in the Universe that is devoid of His grace and love, and there is nothing in the Universe that does not contain the Abiding Presence of Christ. Every Thing is Sacred.
