HISTORY

In 1965, when the Catholic Church in the Philippines celebrated the Fourth Centennial of the Christianization of the country, two monumental projects were undertaken:

(1) the founding of the Mission Society of the Philippines, and

(2) the er****on of a new parish, the Blessed Sacrament Parish. For four centuries, the Philippines was at the receiving end of the missionary thrust from the Universal Church. The country was blessed enough to receive the gift of faith, but it was thought that more blessings will transpire if it is shared with others, especially to the people of Asia. Consequently, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) established the Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP). The CBCP then unanimously endorsed Bishop Epifanio Surban, D.D., of Dumaguete as the first National Director of MSP, whose initial priest-members were volunteers from various dioceses of the country. On the last day of the celebration of the Fourth Centennial, during the Third National Eucharist Congress in Cebu City held on April 28 to May 2, 1965, the Archbishop of Cebu Julio Cardinal Rosales officially erected the Blessed Sacrament Parish. At first, a temporary chapel was constructed on a lot donated by Cebu Development Corporation of the Philippines (CDCP). At that time, May 2 was chosen as the parish feast day. Two years later, a bigger widen chapel was built, thus replacing the first one. However, time and weather took their toll over the years. On September 18, 1978, Rev. Socrates Varga, MSP, the parish priest during the year, Rev. Nilo Nemeño, the Assistant priest, and their parishioners gathered together to witness the laying of the cornerstone for a new concrete church. A ceremony was then officiated by the Archbishop of Cebu, Julio Cardinal Rosales. The new church served as a new landmark for the 400th year of Christianity in the Philippines. On October 12, 2005, Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal, the late Archbishop of Cebu, decreed that the name of Blessed Sacrament Parish is retained, and that Our Mother of Perpetual Help is enthroned as its Patroness.

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION | As we prepare for the approaching typhoon, let us come together in faith and trust in God’s providence. May our prayers rise as one — for safety, strength, and compassion toward one another.

Let us entrust ourselves and our loved ones to the loving care of our Almighty Father, through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Pedro Calungsod, and through the mercy of our beloved child, Sto. Niño de Cebu.

WEAR WHITE ON SUNDAYS | For the past few days now we have been experiencing terrible calamities: typhoons, volcanic eruptions, fires, and earthquakes—one after another! Let us beg the Lord's mercy on our people.

Let us reiterate our invitation for our people to turn again to God with humble and contrite hearts. Let us reiterate our recently released National Call to Prayer and Public Repentance, asking our people to observe it every Sunday-and, where possible, every day-until the Solemnity of Christ the King, with the tolling of bells.

Let it be our collective Miserere, our plea for mercy and renewal as a nation.

"Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a steadfast spirit within me." (Psalm 51:9, 12)

Following the beautiful suggestion of Bishop Jimmy Afable, we encourage our faithful:
📌 to wear white clothes every Sunday of October and November,
📌 and to display white ribbons in homes, churches, and public places - as a sign of our desire for transparency, accountability, and good governance, and as a humble prayer that our nation may be washed clean and renewed in God's mercy, and spared of further calamities.

Let our white garments be a symbol of the purity we seek for our land and our hearts.

May this season of prayer and repentance lead us to hope, healing, and the restoration of our common life in truth and justice.

Let us beg the Lord to renew our nation, and make us instruments of justice and peace.
