THY WILL BE DONE
And He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch." And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will." ¬- Mark 14:34-36
Jesus, the Son of God, already went through so much humiliation from the first day of His incarnation. As if that wasn't humiliation enough, He was bound to be betrayed, denied, and handed over to the authorities to be crucified. Although He was fully-God, he was also fully-human, and as human as we was, he prayed to the Father the night that He was betrayed if there was another way to pay the penalty of the sins of the whole world. Yet, what was galvanized in His heart was the words He uttered with blood as sweat: "yet not what I will, but what You will."
We might be faced with that dilemma ourselves. We may be begging God to send forth a miracle to change the world’s pandemic, and God can. He can change everything in an instant. However, brethren, the goal and purpose of every believer's life is to obey and to submit to whatever the Father asks of us. This is what it means to be a follower of Jesus. As we set our heart in doing the Father's will, He grants us grace and strength to do what He wants us to do, to be who He wants us to become.
Questions:
1. Has God asked you to do something in the midst of difficulty and struggle?
2. What was your response?
3. What is God asking you to do today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the humility and submissiveness of Jesus Christ that has resulted in our salvation and has been an example for us to follow. I pray that as we cry out for a miracle, we would remain submissive to Your sovereign will. I pray that whatever it is You want me to do, You will give me the strength to say, 'Yet not what I will, but what You will.' In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
