“Take Your Eyes OFF It”
“What’s going on!? The power lines are sparking!” screamed Lee, Ada’s elder sister, who was then at the play ground.
“Ada!? Did you plug that old lamp in!?” shouted her mom in terror.
“Mama! Mama! Help! Help! The socket and the wire are on fire!”
“Stay away from the socket! Don’t touch it! I’m coming!”
Ada could no longer remember how she did it, but she miraculously unplugged the wire in panic without being electrocuted before her mother could reach the spot. Thankfully, God graciously saved her house and her neighbors' houses.
It all started when Ada stayed her eyes on an old, shell lamp with its rusty electrical plugs.
“Mama, does it still work?” she curiously asked.
“No, it doesn’t. Never try plugging that in, otherwise we’ll be in danger,” answered her mother before proceeding to her outdoor chores.
Instead of leaving, Ada remained and fixed her eyes on the lamp until she found herself pushing the rusty plug into the socket.
She gave in to her curiosity despite her mother’s warning and nearly caused not only the damage of her own house but also of the neighboring houses.
How often have we suffered because of others’ misbehavior? Or, how often have others suffered because of our own wrong courses? Sin does not only harm the doer; it can harm even the innocent. Its consequences is beyond imagination.
Eve’s disobedience did not only cause her fall but also of her husband’s; then, the entire human race.
Adam, who gave in to his wife’s suggestions, might not have imagined how worst the result of his disobedience could get, but we are witnesses of its wretchedness.
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners…” (Romans 7:19). But praise be to God for “…by the obedience of One (Jesus Christ) shall many be made righteous.” (Romans 7:19).
May our prayers be: “LORD, ‘Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way,’ (Psalm 119:37) that my thoughts and actions be a power for good to my loved ones and to humanity.”
