THE PJS WHITE LIONS RUN | The Pope John XXIII Minor Seminary (PJS) is set to make history as it launches the inaugural PJS White Lions Run on August 8, 2026.

The run features four race categories: 3km, 5km, 10km, and 21km, catering to both casual runners and seasoned athletes.

Participants will receive race inclusions such as a singlet, race bib, medal, and meal, with finishers in the 10km and 21km categories also earning an exclusive finisher’s shirt.

As an added incentive, the first 500 registrants will be granted a FREE membership to Landers Superstore.

Proceeds from the event will support the upgrading of classrooms and facilities, ensuring that the seminary continues to respond effectively to the evolving needs of its students. Yet beyond infrastructure, the run carries a more profound purpose.

According to Fr. Allan Delima, rector of PJS, the event reflects the seminary’s commitment to holistic education—one that forms not only future priests, but also responsible, well-rounded individuals prepared to serve society.

“We welcome young people not because we inspire or encourage them for priesthood,” Fr. Delima explained. “Rather, we welcome them for the way we do education or formations in the seminary. We want to help them develop a balance spiritual, human formation.”

For Engr. Pert Cabataña, chairman of the PJS Alumni, the inspiration behind the run is deeply personal and symbolic. He shared that the idea draws from the vocation story of Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Emilio "Boy" Bataclan, who marks his 60th sacerdotal ordination anniversary this year.

Bishop Bataclan stands as the lone surviving member of the first five Filipino diocesan formators who helped shape the identity and direction of the newly renamed seminary in its formative years.

Notably, his own journey into the seminary did not begin with a clear intention of becoming a priest. Instead, he was first drawn by the strength of its sports program — a simple invitation that would later blossom into a lifelong vocation of service.

Engr. Cabataña noted that Bishop Bataclan’s story captures the very spirit the White Lions Run hopes to embody: that formation can begin in unexpected ways, and that every step, whether on the track or in life, can lead to a greater purpose.

With this vision, the PJS White Lions Run becomes more than a fundraising event. It is a celebration of stories, a witness to vocation, and a living expression of the seminary’s mission to form individuals grounded in faith, discipline, and service, whether in the priesthood or beyond.

We celebrate today the feast of Saint Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Born around 296 in Alexandria, Egypt, he grew up during a time of intense theological conflict. As a young deacon, he accompanied Bishop Alexander to the Council of Nicaea in 325, where the Church confronted the A***n heresy, which denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ. Athanasius played a crucial role in articulating and defending the doctrine that the Son is “consubstantial” with the Father—truly God from God.

When he became Bishop of Alexandria, Athanasius inherited not only a pastoral office but also a battlefield of ideas. Despite the Council’s clear teaching, A***nism continued to spread, often supported by powerful political forces. Athanasius refused to compromise the truth of Christ’s divinity, enduring repeated exile—five times in total—spending nearly 17 years away from his see. Yet even in exile, he continued to write, teach, and encourage the faithful.

His most famous work, On the Incarnation, expresses with clarity and depth the mystery of God becoming man for the salvation of humanity. He taught that “God became man so that man might become God,” emphasizing the transformative power of Christ’s saving work.

Athanasius was not only a theologian but also a pastor who guided his flock through confusion and division. His courage earned him the title “Athanasius contra mundum”—Athanasius against the world—because he stood firm even when much of the world seemed to oppose him.

He died in 373, having witnessed the gradual triumph of orthodoxy. Honored as a Doctor of the Church, Saint Athanasius remains a powerful witness to steadfast faith, reminding believers that truth must be upheld with courage, even at great personal cost.

St. Athanasius, pray for us!

60 YEARS OF GRACE | With joy and deep gratitude, Cebu Auxiliary Bishop-Emeritus Emilio “Boy” Bataclan offered a Thanksgiving Mass earlier today at the Martins of Lisieux Chapel of San Carlos Seminary College in celebration of his 60th Presbyteral Ordination Anniversary.

He was joined by Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla (Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus to South Korea), Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Jose Palma, Prosperidad Bishop Ruben Labajo, Pagadian Bishop Emeritus Emmanuel Cabajar, and other visiting priests.

Recalling his own journey toward the priesthood and eventually the episcopacy, Bishop Boy reflected on how the grace of God quietly unfolded in his life, even amid personal uncertainties and moments of doubt.

He recounted a reminder from then Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal upon learning of his appointment as bishop—words that grounded him in humility and mission rather than honor.

“Put it in your mind that we are not canonizing you, we are giving you another job,” he recalled.

During his canonical retreat, this was further deepened by a reflection from Scripture, emphasizing that God’s call is not based on human merit, but on His desire to manifest His name through those He chooses (cf. Dt 7:7).

He ended his homily by expressing deep hope that, beyond knowing God in theory, one day all may come face to face with Him.

“Dugay na kaayo kong nakaila nimo, Ginoo, in theory. Pero moabot unta ang adlaw nga kaming tanan nga dia dinhi makita gyod sa Imong nawong kay niingon man ka, ‘I’m going to prepare a place for you so that where I am, there you will be,” said Bishop Bataclan.

Ad multos annos, Bishop!

Today we honor Saint Joseph as the humble carpenter of Nazareth, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the foster father of Jesus Christ. Though little is recorded of his words in Scripture, the Gospel describes him as a “just man,” faithful to God’s will and obedient even in uncertainty.

Joseph lived a hidden life of labor, supporting the Holy Family through honest work. As a craftsman, he not only provided for Mary and Jesus but also formed Jesus in the dignity of human labor, teaching Him the trade of carpentry. His daily toil reveals that work is not merely economic necessity but a participation in God’s creative plan.

In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker on May 1 to highlight the Christian meaning of work and to present Joseph as a model for all laborers. This feast affirms that human work possesses dignity and should always serve the good of the person and family.

Joseph’s life is marked by silence, humility, and trust. He accepted God’s plan without hesitation, cared for his family with devotion, and fulfilled his responsibilities without seeking recognition. His example teaches that holiness can be found in ordinary duties done with love and faith.

Today, Saint Joseph the Worker is venerated as the patron of workers and families. The Church continues to look to him as a guardian and intercessor, reminding the faithful—echoed by modern popes—that work must uphold human dignity and contribute to a just and peaceful society.

St. Joseph, pray for us!
