Into the deep
-Arjay U. Alejo, TC

As a Franciscan Amigonian Friar, Novo Millennio Ineunte hits incredibly close to home because it challenges the way I look at my future ministry and my own relationship with the Lord. It’s a powerful reminder that my formation isn't just about passing theology exams or checking pastoral programs; it's about learning to constantly contemplate the face of Jesus and remain in His presence. To live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life and to contemplate His beauty (cf. Psalm 27:4). When Pope St. John Paul II writes about moving out into the deep—duc in altum—it feels like a direct call to step out of my comfort zone and let go of the fear of failure. It reminds me that if I want to help heal a modern world that feels so fragmented and confused, I have to start on my knees, prioritizing what matters most, and to acquire a deep life of prayer and love for the Eucharist and His Word. Ultimately, the letter teaches me that a true shepherd doesn't just manage a parish or a religious organization; he creates a "spirituality of communion" where people can genuinely encounter Christ's love which is bigger than the biggest need of our hearts.

Anchored in God: Scriptures, Hope, and Charity in Benedict XVI
-Arjay U. Alejo, TC

Reading the encyclicals of the late Pope Benedict XVI, “Verbum Domini," “Spe Salvi," and “Deus Caritas Est,” together shows us a profound vision of Pope Benedict on the life rooted in God, grounded on His word, sustained by hope, and animated by love. Verbum Domini inspired us to love the Word of God and be led by this living word that is living and active (cf. Hebrews 4:12), which can transform our lives and inspire us to become missionaries even in the ordinary moments of life. Spe Salvi deepens this by underscoring the importance of hope, which is not just a castle in the air but a wholehearted trust in the Lord who knows what is best for us and gives meaning to our sufferings and perseverance in the face of great tribulations. Deus Caritas Est seals this vision by giving love its rightful place at the heart of all of God’s promises, revelation, and redemption. This love flows through our life of humble service, even for people who do not deserve our love. Together, these encyclicals call us to listen with our ears and hearts to the living word of God, to live with hope even in this constantly changing world, and let the love of God set us and the world around us on fire.

The Theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity remind everyone that Christian life is not just a matter of following rules or performing religious activities. Our Christian life is a journey, a journey towards God Himself. In order for us to reach Him, God gives us the necessary virtues that we need to reach Him.

The first theological virtue is faith. Faith invites us to trust God fully even if we do not totally understand His plans. There will be moments in life that we will experience doubts, difficulties, and uncertainties. Sometimes our prayers seem unanswered, and the vision of the future becomes unclear, but our faith reminds us that God is always present and faithful. Our faith is like a lighthouse guiding us through the dark path, inviting us to listen and believe that God Himself leads us.

Hope gives us strength during trials and tribulations. Oftentimes, life would let us experience disappointments, failures, and discouragement. There would be times we would feel tired, weak, and uncertain and yet, hope teaches us not to give up. God continues to work in our lives. It reminds us that in every suffering and tribulation, there would be joy and consolation for God’s promises are greater than any of our present difficulties. Hope is like an anchor connected to the heart of God, reminding us that we are God’s children.

Charity challenges every Christian to love the way Christ loves us. Loving is not always easy. People could hurt and cause us pains and disappointments. Yet charity calls us to go beyond and forgive others. It calls us to serve and sacrifice for others. It teaches us that charity is not simply a feeling; it is a decision coming from our will, always seeking the good of another person.

The theological virtues work together in our Christian life. Faith enlightens our mind with divine truth, hope strengthens our soul, and charity perfects our will through God’s love. Together, they work to help us remain faithful to our vocation. Ultimately, the theological virtues are not simple there for our success or happiness, but they are intended to reach God Himself. Faith, hope, and charity leads us closer to Christ in this earthly life, until we reach holiness and eternal life.
