Read: Psalm 103
Praise, Honor, Adoration

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
— Psalm 103:1

Let’s look at some of the types of prayer Jesus shows us in the Lord’s Prayer. The place to begin is with praise, honor, and adoration in prayer.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Father, hallowed be your name” (Luke 11:2), recognizing God’s character of being holy, majestic, all-powerful, sovereign over all things, and the source of true wisdom and love. It’s important to remember that prayer should begin with praising and honoring God, recognizing all that God is and all that God has done for us. This is often called adoration of God. Too often in prayer, before we give God glory and honor, we ask God to give us something or to do something for us or for our loved ones.

The prayer of adoration is something we must practice. It can take some effort on our part, but, as with many things, the more we practice adoring God, the easier it gets. And we can begin by simply praying verses of Scripture that show us how awesome God is.

We can read a passage like Psalm 103 out loud, for example. As we prayerfully say these verses about God’s greatness, it doesn’t take long before we begin to actually experience the glory of God. Our prayer moves from talking to God to enjoying the presence of God.

So before we ask God to do something, let’s first give God the glory due his name!

Prayer Starter:
Lord, you are perfect, holy, majestic, and worthy of all our praise. Help us to focus on your glory, faithfulness, and love as we bring our requests to you.

Read Joshua 1:5

God Says, “I Will Be with You”
..As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.
- Joshua 1:5 (AMPC)

The presence of God in our lives helps us overcome fear. If we know by faith that God is with us, we can be grateful for His presence and we can take on any challenge with confidence and courage. We may not always feel God’s presence, but we can be thankful for His Word, remembering that He said He would never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

In the Bible, the basis for not fearing is simply this: God is with us. And if we know God’s character and nature, we know He is trustworthy. We do not have to know what He is going to do, when He is going to do it, or how He is going to do it. Simply knowing He is with us is more than enough.

Prayer of the Day: Father, I am grateful for this new day that You have given me. Regardless of the actions or attitudes of others, I am going to enjoy this day because You are the Source of my joy.

Read 2 Timothy 1:7

Faith Beats Fear

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.
- 2 Timothy 1:7 (AMPC)

“I will not fear” is the only acceptable attitude we can have toward fear. That does not mean that you and I will never feel fear, but it does mean that we will not allow it to rule our decisions and actions.

The Bible says that God has not given us a spirit of fear. Fear is not from God; it is the devil’s tool to keep us from enjoying our lives and making progress. Fear causes us to run, retreat, or shrink back. The Bible says in Hebrews 10:38 that we are to live by faith and not draw back in fear—and if we do draw back in fear, God’s soul has no delight in us. That does not mean God does not love us; it simply means He is disappointed because He wants us to experience all of the good things He has in His plan for us. We can receive from God only by faith.

We should strive to do everything with a spirit of faith. Faith is confidence in God and a belief that His promises are true. Faith will cause you to go forward, to try new things, and to be aggressive. Unless we make a firm decision to “fear not,” we will never be free from the power of it. “Do it afraid” means to feel the fear and do what you believe you should do anyway.

I encourage you to be firm in your resolve to do whatever you need to do, even if you have to “do it afraid!”

Prayer of the Day: Lord, help me face fear with faith and courage. Strengthen my trust in Your promises so I can move forward, obey You, and live boldly even when I feel afraid, amen.

God Is Always Good

How much more will your Father Who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him!
- Matthew 7:11 (AMPC)

God is good, without respect to persons. In other words, He is good to all, all the time. His goodness radiates from Him.

Not everything in our life is good, but God can work it out for good if we will trust Him. Joseph suffered much abuse at the hands of his brothers as a young boy, but later in life when he had an opportunity to get revenge against them, he said: …You thought evil against me, but God meant it for good… (Genesis 50:20 AMPC). Joseph could have been bitter, but he searched for the good in his painful situation.

God’s entire motive and purpose is to do good to everyone who will receive it from Him. It is impossible for God not to be good, because it is His character. Don’t think that God is like people, because His ways and thoughts are far above ours (Isaiah 55:8–9).

Prayer of the Day: Father, help me trust Your goodness even when life is painful or confusing. Guard my heart from bitterness and teach me to believe You are working all things for good, amen.

Read Colossians 3:2

A Case of the “Ifs”

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
- Colossians 3:2 (NIV)

Do you have a bad case of the “ifs”? It is a common misconception that if only we had this, that, or the other, we would find the happiness and fulfillment we so desperately desire. We find ourselves saying things like: If I didn’t have to work, if we had more money, if I had a bigger house, if the kids were grown, if I were married, if I weren’t married . . .

Stop thinking that you could be happy “if” your circumstances were different, and start being happy right now because God loves you and has already blessed you in many ways. Our unhappiness usually comes from within us and not from something around us. So, I recommend that you take responsibility for your own joy and stop blaming the lack of it on anything or anyone. The people who are happy are the ones who decide to be happy.

Prayer of the Day: Lord, help me stop chasing happiness in circumstances. Teach me to choose joy today, be grateful for Your blessings, and trust that true contentment comes from You alone, amen.

High Praises of God

Let the saints be joyful in the glory and beauty [which God confers upon them]; let them sing for joy upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their throats and a two-edged sword in their hands.
- Psalm 149:5-6 (AMPC)

We should form a habit of thanking and praising God as soon as we wake up each morning. While we are still lying in bed, let’s give thanks and fill our minds with Scripture.

Praise defeats the devil quicker than any other battle plan. Praise is an invisible garment that we put on, and it protects us from defeat and negativity in our minds. But it must be genuine, heartfelt praise, not just lip service or a method being tried to see if it works. We praise God for the promises in His Word and for His goodness.

Worship is a battle position! As we worship God for Who He is and for His attributes, for His ability and might, we draw closer to Him and the enemy is defeated.

We can never be too thankful! Thank God all day long and remember the many things He has done for you.

Prayer of the Day: Lord, I praise You for Your goodness and faithfulness. Fill my heart with gratitude, clothe me in worship, and guard my mind with Your peace today, amen.

Read: Genesis 50:15-21

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
— Genesis 50:20

Joseph brought his father and all his brothers and their families to live in Egypt so that they would have plenty during the years of famine. Their father, Jacob, died in Egypt, and after they buried him back at home in the land of Canaan, they all returned to Egypt (Genesis 46:1-50:14).

Now Joseph’s brothers began to worry that he still had a grudge against them. While Jacob was alive, they thought they had a line of defense to keep Joseph from seeking revenge for selling him as a slave, but now they wondered what would happen next.

The brothers sent a message to Joseph, in which they admitted their sins against him and pleaded for forgiveness. Although they had been living near Joseph for several years now in Egypt, they were still not sure of his feelings toward them. Had he really forgiven them? Joseph wept when he received their message. He had already forgiven his brothers, but it can take years for reconciliation to take shape.

When Joseph’s brothers came to him, he reassured them and helped them to see again that God had intended all of this for good. Indeed, God was working out his plan to make their family into a nation that would bring blessing to all others (Genesis 12:1-3).

This was a new kind of vision to help people see the amazing ways God works in our lives and in his world.

Prayer Starter:
Dear God, help us to see not just the hurts and troubles in this world but also how you work to bring us life.
