Following Jesus may cost you everything but it gains you Christ.

The world celebrates those who fit in, stay quiet, and follow the crowd.

Jesus says something different:

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." — Matthew 5:10

This is one of the most surprising promises in Scripture.

Jesus never promised His followers popularity.
He never promised comfort.
He never promised universal acceptance.

In fact, He warned that those who belong to Him would face opposition.

Why?

Because a world that rejects Christ will often reject those who follow Him.

But persecution is not a sign that God has abandoned His people. It is often evidence that they belong to Him.

The prophets were persecuted.
The apostles were persecuted.
Jesus Himself was persecuted.

And yet, through every insult, rejection, and hardship, God remained faithful.

The gospel reminds us that Christ endured the ultimate suffering on behalf of sinners. He was mocked, rejected, and crucified so that those who trust in Him might inherit eternal life.

So when obedience to Christ becomes costly, do not lose heart. Your reward is not found in the approval of people. It is found in the King who was rejected before you.

The world may oppose those who follow Jesus, but heaven belongs to them.

Last Sunday's worship reminded us to stay spiritually alert and depend on God through prayer. In a world full of distractions and challenges, may we continually watch, pray, and remain faithful to Christ.

"If I truly love God, why do I still struggle to obey Him?"

Many believers silently carry this question.

Jesus' words in Gethsemane reveal a truth that is both humbling and comforting:

"The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41)

The struggle itself is not proof that your faith is fake. It is evidence that there is a battle taking place within you.

The Christian life was never meant to be lived by willpower alone. Jesus did not say, "Try harder." He said, "Watch and pray."

Victory is not found in self-confidence.

Victory is found in dependence on Christ.

When your strength fails, His grace remains.

Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of reconciliation.

The world longs for peace, yet it cannot produce it.

Nations fight.
Families divide.
Friendships break.
Hearts remain restless.

Why?

Because our greatest conflict is not with one another.

It is with God.

Sin has separated humanity from its Creator, and until that problem is solved, true peace will always remain out of reach.

That is why Jesus came.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Christ made peace between a holy God and sinful people. The cross is the ultimate act of reconciliation.

And those who have been reconciled to God are now called to be peacemakers.

Not merely peacekeepers who avoid conflict.
Not people-pleasers who sacrifice truth for comfort.

But peacemakers who speak truth with grace, pursue reconciliation, and point people to Christ, the Prince of Peace.

This work is difficult because it requires humility.
It requires forgiveness.
It requires dying to self.

But it reflects the heart of our Savior.

The greatest peacemakers are those who first understand the peace they have received through the gospel.

You cannot bring lasting peace between people until you know the peace that comes from God.

What fills your heart reveals what your soul truly craves.

Everyone is hungry for something.

Some hunger for success.
Some thirst for acceptance.
Others chase wealth, pleasure, recognition, or control.

Yet no matter how much the world offers, the soul remains unsatisfied apart from God.

Jesus said:

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." — Matthew 5:6

This is not a hunger for self-righteousness or moral superiority. It is a deep longing to know God, obey Him, and be made right with Him.

The tragedy of sin is that it causes us to crave everything except the One we need most.

But the gospel changes our desires.

Through Christ, God gives new hearts to His people, hearts that increasingly long for His truth, His holiness, and His kingdom.

The good news is that those who come to Christ empty will never leave empty.

Jesus is the Bread of Life.
Jesus is the Living Water.

What the world promises but cannot deliver, Christ freely gives.

So ask yourself: What am I truly hungry for?bBecause whatever satisfies your soul today will shape your eternity tomorrow.

Only Christ can satisfy the hunger that this world can never fill.

The strongest person in the room is not always the loudest one.

The world often equates strength with dominance, influence, and the ability to get your own way.

But Jesus points us to something far greater:

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." — Matthew 5:5

Meekness is not weakness.

It is the strength to submit to God when your flesh wants control.
It is the humility to trust God's timing when you want immediate results.
It is the willingness to obey Christ when the world offers an easier path.

Jesus Himself embodied this perfectly.

Though He had the power to stop His suffering, He willingly endured the cross according to the Father's will. His meekness was not a lack of strength—it was perfect strength surrendered to God.

And this is the posture God desires in His people.

Not self-exaltation, but humility.
Not self-rule, but submission.
Not confidence in self, but confidence in Christ.

The gospel reminds us that salvation is received by those who come empty-handed, trusting not in their own strength, but in the finished work of Jesus.

The kingdom of God is not inherited by the proud who elevate themselves,
but by the humble who bow before the King.

God never wastes the tears of His people.

In a world broken by sin, grief is unavoidable.

We mourn lost loved ones.
Broken relationships.
Disappointments.
And sometimes, the weight of our own sin.

Yet Jesus makes a surprising promise:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
— Matthew 5:4

The world sees mourning as weakness.
Jesus sees it differently.

Those who mourn understand that this world is not as it should be. They feel the effects of sin, suffering, and brokenness and long for something greater.

And it is often in those moments of deepest sorrow that God's comfort becomes most precious.

The gospel does not promise a life free from grief.bIt promises a Savior who walks with us through it.

Jesus Himself was called a Man of Sorrows. He wept. He suffered. He carried our griefs. And through His death and resurrection, He secured a future where sorrow, death, and pain will one day be no more.

So if your heart is heavy today, take hope.

God sees every tear.
He knows every burden.
And He is near to the brokenhearted.

The same Christ who carried your sins is able to carry your sorrows as well.

The first step toward God is realizing you desperately need Him.

The world tells us to be strong, self-sufficient, and independent.

Jesus says something completely different:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 5:3

To be poor in spirit is to recognize your spiritual bankruptcy before God.

It is the humble acknowledgment that you cannot save yourself.
You cannot earn forgiveness.
You cannot make yourself righteous enough for a holy God.

And that is exactly where grace begins.

The gospel is not for people who think they have everything together.
It is for those who know they are sinners in need of a Savior.

The proud trust in themselves.
The poor in spirit trust in Christ.

The proud say, “I can handle this on my own.”
The poor in spirit say, “Lord, have mercy on me.”

This is why Jesus calls them blessed.

Not because they are strong, but because they have stopped pretending to be.

When you come to the end of yourself, you discover that Christ is more than enough.

The doorway to God's kingdom is not self-confidence, it is humble dependence upon Jesus Christ.

Growth often hurts because God refuses to leave His people unchanged.

No one enjoys pruning.

We want growth without discomfort, blessing without surrender, and fruit without refinement.

But Jesus says in John 15 that the Father prunes every branch that bears fruit so it can become even more fruitful.

Why?

Because God is not only concerned with your comfort.
He is concerned with your holiness.

Sometimes God removes what is dead.
Sometimes He cuts away what distracts.
Sometimes He allows painful seasons to expose what is rooted too deeply in this world.

And while pruning feels painful in the moment, it is actually evidence of His care. A loving Gardener does not ignore diseased branches. He cuts with purpose so that life may flourish.

The gospel reminds us that God does not merely save sinners from judgment. He transforms them into the likeness of Christ. That process is called sanctification. And sanctification often requires surrender.

So if God is exposing pride, unhealthy desires, sinful habits, or misplaced priorities in your life, do not resist His work.

Trust the Gardener. Because the same hands that prune are the same hands that were pierced on the cross to save you.

The world teaches you to trust yourself. The Bible teaches you to fear God.

Proverbs 9:10 says:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Real wisdom does not begin with human opinions, personal feelings, or worldly success. It begins with recognizing who God is—and who we are before Him.

We live in a culture that celebrates self-reliance and personal truth. People are told to follow their hearts, define their own morality, and become their own authority.

But Scripture exposes the problem:

Humanity’s greatest issue is not lack of intelligence, it is rebellion against God.

From the garden of Eden until today, mankind has continually chosen independence over submission to the Creator.

Yet true wisdom is found in surrender.

God created the world.
God defines truth.
God alone knows what leads to life.

And through Jesus Christ, God has made a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him not through human wisdom or good works, but through the cross.

So if you want real understanding, start where wisdom truly begins:

Humble yourself before God.

Because the wisest thing a person can ever do is stop trusting themselves and start trusting Christ.

A life built on human wisdom will eventually fall but a life built on God’s truth stands firm forever.
