Sometimes life seems full of trials and challenges, but as we rely on the Lord and trust in His way, all will be alright.

As a father, how can I best lead and preside over my family?

The best example to follow as a father is God, our Heavenly Father. He righteously presides over the world and all of His creations by expressing His love to us; helping us live happier, more successful lives; teaching us and helping us to grow; giving us commandments to protect us from danger; and providing everything that we need for our temporal and spiritual salvation. These duties are expected of our earthly fathers as well.

Fathers, as you strive to fulfill these responsibilities, remember that in order to righteously lead and preside over your family, you need to be united with God and with your wife in all things. You have "a sacred duty to rear [your] children in love and righteousness", and this can only be done when husbands and wives are united in these efforts and in following God's will ("The Family: A Proclamation to the World").

Does my influence as a father really matter?

The greatest place for learning that our children have is in our very homes, for it is the first place they will experience love, joy, comfort, and discipline in their lives. A father's influence especially has a great impact on who his children will become as they grow up.

Jesus Christ is the greatest example of how His Father influenced His, for He could not do the greatest responsibility He was tasked to accomplished---atoning for the sins of the world---without His Father's example and support, saying, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise," (John 5:19).

Fathers, you play a vital role in the lives of their children and their future families. By being an exemplar of Christlike attributes and conduct, your actions will teach your children how to live happier lives and protect them from the future attacks of the adversary, impacting them and the generations to follow you.

How can I best show my children my love for them?

In showing His love for us, our Heavenly Father sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind. He has also given us the gospel of Jesus Christ that will lead us and our families back to our Father's presence and enjoy peace and happiness in this life.

Like our Heavenly Father, a father best shows his love for his family through the sacrifices he makes---sacrificing his own desires to provide for his family's needs, to follow Jesus Christ himself, and to lead his family back to the presence of our Heavenly Father.

For this Father's Day, let us give appreciation to all the beloved fathers who have sacrificed and given their all for their families. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers in our lives!

What are my most important responsibilities as a father?

One of the father's most important roles is providing for this family, temporally and spiritually. As Elder L. Tom Perry taught: "[The father's] leadership in the home must include leading in family worship....'You give father's blessings. As a leader in your home you plan and sacrifice to achieve the blessing of a unified and happy family. To do all of this requires that you live a family-centered life.'"

Providing and presiding over the family is a divine role appointed unto our fathers. It is a sacred responsibility coming from a Heavenly Father, who nurtures and provides for all of His children on the Earth. Therefore, we promise that as you put Him first in your life and in your family's life, He will bless you with the opportunities and strength you need to help your family prosper temporally and spiritually.

How can the influence of the father helps his children and his grandchildren in this life?

Elder Russell M. Ballard taught, "Fathers and sons can play a critical role in helping each other become the best that they can be....Fathers, you are the primary model of manhood for your sons. You are their most meaningful mentor, and, believe it or not, you are their hero in countless ways. Your words and your example are a great influence on them."

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe in fathers and that “by divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families,” (The Family: A Proclamation to the World). We also believe that God will help you in these divine and eternal responsibilities as you continue to put your trust in Him.

As Father's Day approaches, we wanted to highlight the great examples of fathers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In order to learn how the gospel can improve and help families, we interviewed one faithful father right here in Cagayan Valley!

What is my role as a husband in my marriage to my wife?

President Howard W. Hunter said, "A man who holds the priesthood shows perfect moral fidelity to his wife and gives her no reason to doubt his faithfulness. A husband is to love his wife with all his heart and cleave unto her and none else (see D&C 42:22–26)." Sister Lian, a mother and a wife, shares her experience with how her husband has honored her as a wife:

"Rhovic and I have been married for almost 7 years, this journey wasn't easy but it is always worth to live in and I always grateful to be with him for now and for all eternity because he is always striving to honor his covenants to God and his duty as husband to me by being:

1) GOOD PROVIDER:
He always prioritizes our needs, including that he always cooks meals for us.

2) CARING:
He always values my feelings, and he takes care of me when I am sick, even when he is tired from His work and most especially. He always gives us priesthood blessings.

3) SUPPORTIVE:
He always listens to my plans and goals. He always uplifts me whenever I feel down. He cheers me up, telling me that "I can do it!" or "I am doing great," and he is always by my side no matter what. He never forces me to do the things I don't like to do. We pray together and seek revelation and ask for heavenly guidance as we plan and set goals together for our family. Lastly, he honors his husband duty by being:

4) A PARTNER:
He is a good listener and humble. He never lets simple misunderstandings become a problem. We always fix it immediately before the day ends. He lets us feel that we are "partners" in all things or always be one, and mostly, we keep the love burning, we respect each other and provide time."

As Sister Lian has shared, it is essential for any man to love and honor his wife, and these characteristics---characteristics gained from following Jesus Christ---are some of the many that husbands can develop to more fully honor their wives and create happy homes.

How can I improve my marriage to my spouse?

Elder F. Burton Howard said, "If you want something to last forever, you treat it differently. You shield it and protect it. You never abuse it. You don’t expose it to the elements. You don’t make it common or ordinary. If it ever becomes tarnished, you lovingly polish it until it gleams like new. It becomes special because you have made it so, and it grows more beautiful and precious as time goes by. Eternal marriage is just like that. We need to treat it just that way."

Through the gospel of Jesus Christ, it's possible for a marriage to last through all eternity, not just in this life. With this knowledge, husbands and wives should do everything they can to nourish and protect their marriage and families so that their love can continue to grow and flourish in this life and through eternities.

We know that the best hope for any marriage is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through Christ's teachings, you will learn how to become a better person and a better spouse. You will receive peace through life's struggles and a sure foundation against any force that wishes to destroy your marriage. Your marriage is important to God, and He will help you as you continue to follow the teachings of His Beloved Son.
