The word liturgy comes from a Greek term meaning "public work or work done on behalf of the people". Liturgy is holy work. Every Liturgical celebration is an action of Christ the High Priest and his Mystical Body, the Church.
Through liturgical celebrations of the Church, we participate in the Paschal Mystery of Christ and also teach us about Jesus and the meaning of the mysteries we are celebrating.
Why is good liturgy important? Christ is present in the Liturgy. Good liturgy teaches us in mystagogical ways, so it absolutely matters that we pay attention to every aspect of the liturgical action and environment. If we hide, clutter, shortcut, erase or shorten the signs and symbols inside the liturgy, their meaning may be weakened, lost or even replaced.
"In the Liturgy the sanctification of the man is signified by signs perceptible to the senses, and is effected in a way which corresponds with each of these signs; in the Liturgy the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, that is, by the Head and His members."
