Today, we commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution. We thank God for the enduring faith and hope of the Filipino people, whose prayers, solidarity, and sacrifices became instruments of His grace in the restoration of democracy.

This historic witness calls us not only to remember but also to reflect and to act. It compels us to ensure that the darkness of the Martial Law era is never repeated. It urges us to stand firmly for truth, to uphold human dignity and rights, to strengthen our institutions, to combat corruption, and to walk in solidarity with those on the margins.

Faithful to our Catholic mission, SMCCI is dedicated to forming individuals who serve God, commit to the common good, and live with integrity. We believe that God is ever-present and actively at work in our history, calling us to discern His will, witness to His truth, and act with purpose.

In honor of this significant event, and as recommended by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, SMCCI will observe an academic holiday. Please note that this will be a REGULAR SCHOOL DAY, highlighted by activities that celebrate this pivotal moment in our nation’s history.

Ash Wednesday, the Beginning of Lent |
The time has now come in the Church year for the solemn observance of the great central act of history, the redemption of the human race by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Roman Rite, the beginning of the forty days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes which is used in today's liturgy. The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to canonical penance. The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely external act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent. The Alleluia and the Gloria are suppressed until Easter.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the laws regarding abstinence and fasting are as follows:

Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. This applies to all persons 14 years of age and older.

Fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday applies to all Catholics who have completed their eighteenth year to the beginning of their sixtieth year. A person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
