Could you not watch with Me one hour?” — Matthew 26:40

Jesus found His disciples sleeping when He asked them to watch and pray. Sometimes, we can be the same. We come to church and spend time in God’s presence but little by little, we can become spiritually asleep.

We become too busy to pray, too tired to read His Word, too distracted to seek Him, and too comfortable to notice that our spiritual life is slowly growing cold. Being around Jesus is not enough. We must remain awake, watchful, and prayerful.

Lord, help us not only to be present in Your house, but to be present in Your presence. Keep us awake. Keep us praying. Keep us close to You.

Even when we are inside the church, serving in ministry, and doing things for God, we can still grow cold and drift away from our first love. Being active in ministry does not automatically mean our hearts are close to Jesus.

“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.” — Jeremiah 3:22

Sometimes, we backslide when:

1) When we focus more on our love for Jesus than on His love for us - We obey not to earn His love, but because He loved us first.

2) When our prayer life falls asleep
Like Jesus warned Simon prayerlessness can make us vulnerable to returning to our old ways.

3) When we follow Jesus from a distance
Choosing only the parts of discipleship that are comfortable. Following Jesus requires surrender, sacrifice, and a heart aligned with Him.

4) When we become numbed by the world's fire
Slowly losing our hunger for the fire that comes from God.

5) When we return to our old life
forgetting that apart from Christ, we can do nothing.

So, examine your heart.
Are you still following Jesus or are you only staying busy for Him?
Don’t let ministry hide a heart that is slowly growing cold. Return to Jesus. Stay close. Stay awake. Stay surrendered.
