Like someone planting and watering a tree that will take years to grow, much of Christian mission requires patience. A prayer, conversation, act of mercy, lesson taught, or seed of the gospel may bear fruit long after we have forgotten it. God sees beyond the moment we can see. Therefore, do not despise quiet faithfulness.

Sometimes we share the gospel and see no immediate response. Sometimes we disciple, pray, serve, and remain faithful for years without seeing the result we hoped for. Christian mission reminds us that we are participating in something larger than what we can presently see. Our responsibility is faithfulness; the outcome ultimately belongs to God.

We have received forgiveness, reconciliation, hope, and new life through Christ. But these gifts were never meant to terminate with us. God makes us His people and then invites us to participate in His mission toward others. Grace received becomes grace carried into the world.

Paul does not describe becoming a Christian as simply becoming a more religious version of yourself. He says, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.” God does more than repaint the outside of our lives; He begins His renewing work from within. In Christ, a new identity, new allegiance, new purpose, and new future begin.

The church cannot bring the fullness of God’s future kingdom by its own strength, but it can point toward that future. Our relationships, generosity, holiness, compassion, justice, peace, and reconciliation should provide small glimpses of what it means for Jesus to reign. We live in the present while bearing witness to God’s promised future. The church is a sign pointing beyond itself to the King.

It is possible to say that Jesus forgives while still refusing to forgive others. But the gospel we proclaim should reshape the relationships we live in. We forgive not because sin does not matter, but because we ourselves have received extraordinary mercy from God. A reconciled people should increasingly become a reconciling people.

Our mission involves both proclamation and demonstration. We speak the good news of Jesus, but our communities should also see what His kingdom looks like through love, mercy, holiness, generosity, truth, and reconciliation. The church is meant to become a preview of God’s coming kingdom. The message we preach should increasingly take visible form among us.

The gospel begins with what God has done through Christ. God reconciles sinners to Himself and does not leave the reconciled simply enjoying that blessing privately. He entrusts to us the message of reconciliation. Those who have received peace with God are sent to announce that peace to others.

In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul calls believers “Christ’s ambassadors.” An ambassador does not primarily represent himself but the one who sent him. In the same way, Christians belong to God’s kingdom while living in the present world. Wherever we go, we carry the responsibility and privilege of representing our King.
