Some of us aren't making disciples, we're making meetings.
We meet at "X" time.
We do "Y" small talk.
We study "Z" material.
We don't know each other's lives deeply.
We don't know each other's struggles.
We don't know each other's burdens.
We're just meeting to meet, probably to tell someone that "we met this week" or, if you're like me, to make yourself feel better.
But this isn't the Jesus way of discipleship.
Jesus knew His guys deeply.
Jesus knew His guys' struggles.
Jesus knew His guys' burdens.
And He knew all of this because He kept His circle small and multiplicative.
Jesus didn't keep adding to His discipleship group. In fact, Jesus shrank it!
He called 12, but He focused on 3.
And it is very possible that Jesus delegated each of those 3 (Peter, James, John) to follow up the other 9 (3 each).
You're not making meetings because you're disobedient; you're making meetings because you're overwhelmed.
But discipleship isn't a show. You don't need to impress anyone. You don't need to display numbers.
Discipleship is serious. It is sacred. It is to give spiritual life.
You cannot disciple unless you know deeply those in your discipleship group. And you cannot know their lives if you're overwhelmed with too many to know.
Instead, focus on a few.
Instead, know those few deeply.
Instead, teach those few to multiply.
That's what Jesus did.
You don't need to make a 50 person meeting. But you do need to make disciples.
And if you do it the Jesus way, those few disciples will multiply to hundreds, or thousands, or even tens of thousands!
Quality disciples multiplying quality quantities of disciples.
That's our task (Mt. 28:19-20).
