Saint John Baptist de Rossi was born in 1698 near Genoa, Italy, and grew up as a young boy known for his faith, kindness, and devotion to God. At an early age, his relatives noticed his good character and dedication to prayer, so they helped provide him with a better education. Through the guidance of religious mentors, he was able to continue studying in Rome, where he became an excellent student and eventually became a priest at only 23 years old. Even while young, he showed qualities of humility, discipline, and a strong desire to serve God and others.

One important lesson from his life was learning the balance between sacrifice and wisdom. As a young seminarian, John Baptist practiced extreme fasting and self-denial because he believed it would make him holier. However, these severe practices damaged his health and caused long periods of weakness and suffering. Through this experience, he realized that holiness is not achieved by harming oneself but by faithfully accepting daily struggles, fulfilling responsibilities with patience, and treating others with kindness.

Saint John Baptist de Rossi dedicated most of his life to helping societyโ€™s forgotten people. Even before becoming a priest, he already cared deeply for the poor, abandoned, sick, and homeless. He volunteered in shelters, taught catechism, prepared people for the Sacraments, and brought spiritual guidance to workers and families. He believed that everyone deserved dignity, compassion, and an opportunity to grow closer to God regardless of their social status. His willingness to serve people in difficult situations showed his genuine love and concern for humanity.

Saint Rita of Cascia is recognized as the patron saint of impossible causes and desperate cases. She is likewise invoked by the faithful for intercession in matters concerning marital difficulties, conflict and discord, and infertility.

Margherita Lotti was born in a small town near Cascia, Italy. After years of childlessness, Ritaโ€™s parents saw her birth as an answer to prayer. As a child, Ritaโ€™s strong faith led her parents to set up an oratory in their home in which she could pray. As a young girl, Rita begged their permission to enter a convent but her parents gave her away in marriage at the age of twelve, part of the reason that she is the patron saint of impossible causes.

A long-standing feud existed between Ritaโ€™s husbandโ€™s family and a neighboring family. Although Rita constantly prayed for peace, her husband, Paolo, was killed while trying to end the conflict. At his funeral, Rita forgave his murderer, but when her two sons planned revenge, she prayed that God would prevent them from committing murder. Her prayers were answered when both sons died before carrying out their plan. Rita again sought to enter religious life but was initially refused because of her past. After helping bring peace between the feuding families, she was admitted to the convent in Cascia, where she spent forty years in prayer, penance, and devotion. Many believed her prayers brought blessings and miracles.

At the age of sixty, while deep in prayer before a crucifix, Sister Rita received the miraculous gift of the stigmata in the form of a wound on her head, inflicted by one of the thorns that pierced Jesusโ€™ brow. Since Ritaโ€™s death from tuberculosis at the age of seventy, many miracles have been attributed to her intercession. Her incorrupt body is on display in a glass reliquary at the Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia. It is said that at times her body levitates and that sweet odors permeate the air.

St. Christopher Magallanes is one of 25 Saints who are honored for refusing to be intimidated by the anti-Catholic policies of the Mexican government. They were killed for leading the faithful during the persecution of the Church in that country at the start of the 20th century.

Christopher was born in Mexico in 1869 to a family of farmersโ€”he grew up working as a shepherd, and entered the seminary at the age of 19. After his ordination, he was assigned to a parish in his hometown. There, he started schools and helped the people initiate public works to benefit the town, such as a carpentry shop and the building of a dam. He also began a mission in a nearby village to reach the local indigenous people.

A secularist and anti-Catholic Mexican government took shape during the Mexican Revolution, and in 1914, it closed the seminary where Christopher studied. He offered his parish as a relocation site for the seminary, and soon 17 students were (illegally) preparing for the priesthood there. During the revolution, Christoper spoke out against armed rebellion. Still, he was accused of supporting the Cristero rebel fighters. On this date in 1927, he was traveling to a farm to celebrate Mass and was arrested. He was executed four days later without a trial.

After his arrest, he gave away his possessions to those who were about to execute him. Just before he died, he shouted this statement from his cell: โ€œI am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico.โ€
