Matthew 8:5-13

(Matthew 8:5-13 [tglulb2018eb])
Miracles are mighty works (Powers), wonders, and signs. It is not a normal phenomenon, common, purposeless, and for itself. It accomplishes something good, is great and amazing, and accompanies and authenticates the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, apostles, and the prophets.
This is the second miracle of Jesus from the first group of miracles section of the topical book of Matthew described after He went off teaching from the Mount Olives.
What message does the miracle scene illuminate for us?
I. God’s INCLUSIVE Grace towards all people (vv. 5-7)
God is great because He has inclusive grace, mercy, and love.
Grace is unmerited or unearned favor.
His grace is given not according to who we are, what we do, what we achieved, how old we are, and where we live. We are equal in God’s eyes. We are all undeserving. We are all sinners. (v. 11; Galatians 3:28; Romans 3:23)

He gives grace not because of who we are but because of who He is. He is gracious, merciful, faithful, and He is Love himself. (1 John 4:16; Deuteronomy 7:6-8) People love because they receive something back, they think it is their duty, they are forced to, or
Therefore, in our limited view, anyone can come to Christ. Hindi mo kailangang maging Israelita, mayaman, matalino, mahirap, maganda para maligtas. Wala sayo kundi sa Kanya ang pagtanggap mo ng pabor o ng grasya.
1. Common Grace
a. Natural or Provisional blessings (Matthew 5:45)
b. Christian moral revolution (Matthew 5:16; John 13:34-35)
c. Restraint of evil by giving conscience (Genesis 3:22; Romans 2:15) and society (Proverbs 2; Deuteronomy 6)
d. Forbearance of Judgement (2 Peter 3:9)
e. Knowledge of the Gospel (John 16:8; Matthew 24:14)
2. Special Grace (Salvation)
1 Timothy 4:10
Ephesians 1:3-6
II. God’s UNLIMITED Power towards all people.
God is great because He has unlimited power
Christ’s power is not limited to Christ’s presence or touch. Ultimate expression is creation out of nothing. God can do anything. He by only the words of his mouth can do a miracle. We can’t. Don’t believe in positive confession or claiming things into existence.
Another expression that is particular to the miracle presented is the Atonement. God’s power is expressed in the atonement that even the unbelievers or reprobates can experience the grace of God. It is not limited to the elect. (e.g. Christian moral revolution and Knowledge of the Gospel)
About Christian Moral Revolution. “Today, even as belief in God fades across the West, the countries that were once collectively known as Christendom continue to bear the stamp of the two-millennia-old revolution that Christianity represents. It is the principal reason why, by and large, most of us who live in post-Christian societies still take for granted that it is nobler to suffer than to inflict suffering. It is why we generally assume that every human life is of equal value. In my morals and ethics, I have learned to accept that I am not Greek or Roman at all, but thoroughly and proudly Christian.” (Tom Holland)
III. God’s ULTIMATE Authority towards all people.
God is great because He has ultimate authority
Without Jesus declaring someone is healed no one will be. It is under his authority for a person to be healed not ours.
We can have great faith but without a great God who decides whatever He pleases to do nothing will happen.
Matthew 26:39
Psalm 115:3
God is even sovereign over salvation, (Ephesians 1:3-6)
RC Sproul “It is sovereign, divine prerogative to dispense his grace and mercy however he chooses to do it… Nobody received injustice. God never punishes innocent people. But, He does redeem guilty people. But He doesn’t redeem them all and He is under no obligation to redeem any. The amazing thing is that He redeems some.”
Christ’s power is not limited to Christ’s presence or touch. Ultimate expression is creation out of nothing. God can do anything. He by only the words of his mouth can do a miracle. We can’t. Don’t believe in positive confession or claiming things into existence.
Think of the condition of other people not just yourself. Be concerned about the people’s eternal and present state.e are called to love one another and through our fellowships, God provides (Matthew 5:16; John 13:34-35). We are called to believe in Christ and through Him, God saves (John 3:16)..
1. Knowledge
Knows Christ and Seeks to know Christ more.
As we grow in knowledge we grow also in faith. (Romans 10:17)
2. Humility
Acknowledge your need for salvation both in your present situation and your eternal state. Umamin sa sitwasyon. We are called to love one another and through our fellowships God provides (Matthew 5:16; John 13:34-35). We are called to believe in Christ and through Him God saves (John 3:16).
Acknowledge your unworthiness before the King. You are weak and a sinner. (Romans 7) Jesus himself prayed before He went to ministry (Matthew 4)
Think of the condition of other people not just yourself. Be concerned of the people’s eternal and present state.
3. Trust
Living Faith or Dead Faith? Living. (Hebrews 10:38; James 2:17)
Great Faith or Small Faith? Either. Great faith is not necessary. Jesus said that a faith that is the size of the mustard seed (small) can move mountains. (Matthew 17:20) It is not in the size of the faith but the size of the object of faith. The great faith is necessary here only to emphasize the uniqueness of Gentiles from the Israelites same with Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan. It is not the goodness of the Samaritan that saves also not the type of faith but the grace and will of God.
Enduring Faith or Easy Faith? Enduring. (Matthew 24:13) True faith is tested. Those who endure to the end will be saved.
