The account of Philip shows that even one of Jesus' own disciples did not yet fully understand who Jesus was.
Like Philip, many people today do not believe that Jesus is God the Father.
Although Philip had walked with Jesus for years, he still asked:
> John 14:8 – "Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us."
Philip was looking for the Father as though He were someone other than Jesus.
Jesus' response
Jesus gently corrected Philip:
> John 14:9 – "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?"
Jesus was revealing that He is the visible manifestation of the invisible Father.
The Father dwells in Jesus
Jesus continued:
> John 14:10 – "Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?... the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."
The Father was dwelling in Christ, performing His works through Him.
Jesus is the image of the invisible God
> Colossians 1:15 – "Who is the image of the invisible God..."
Since God is invisible, Jesus is His visible image and revelation.
All the fullness of God dwells in Christ
> Colossians 2:9 – "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
The fullness of God's divine nature is present in Jesus Christ.
The Son is called the Everlasting Father
> Isaiah 9:6 – "For unto us a child is born... and his name shall be called... The mighty God, The everlasting Father..."
The promised Messiah is given the title Everlasting Father.
God was manifested in the flesh
> 1 Timothy 3:16 – "God was manifest in the flesh..."
Jesus is God revealed in human flesh.
Conclusion
Like Philip, many people seek the Father apart from Jesus. Yet Jesus declared:
> John 14:9 – "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father."
These passages teach that Jesus is the complete revelation of the one true God—the Father manifested in the flesh.
