Ave Maria!
With the official memorandum from the CBCP encouraging the faithful to return to what is normal especially the Sunday Masses, most of the church goers are also pleading the Bishops and priests to sanction the first norm of receiving communion by the tongue. Well, in the first place there was no official pronouncement from the church banning the faithful to receive the Lord on their tongue amidst covid pandemic. The first norm (by mouth) never changed. Thus, priests should not deny anyone if they wish to receive the Lord Jesus directly through the mouth most especially if they kneel down upon receiving.
Pope John Paul II emphasizes the importance of guarding against any abuses concerned with the reception of Communion in the hand (along with other possible abuses), but he also recognizes communion by the hand as a valid option and that many of those who โreceive the Lord Jesus in the hand, do so with profound reverence and devotion.โ (Dominicae Cenae)
I think to receive the Lord by the hand is relatively less reverent in our culture and at this time of crisis of faith: but only in a very broad sense, as a generalization. It has (here and now especially in America) less of what we might call a "conditioned reverence" than kneeling and by mouth does. Nevertheless, in any event, I still hearken back to interior disposition and what is in one's heart. That's ultimately where it's at, and trumps all else. (FB post of Dave Armstrong)
