# # **Sermon: New Beginnings in Christ**

**Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:22–24**

> *"To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."*

**HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!**

The world celebrates this time as a symbol of new beginnings. We often hear the phrase **"New Year’s Resolutions."** But what does the New Year truly mean to you?

As Christians, we don’t have to wait for a new year to take action or change our lives. However, honestly, when we start something new, we often fail to finish it. In the midst of failure and discouragement, we sometimes forget that we can stand up and start again.

A New Year isn’t necessarily a "special" day compared to any other, but it serves as a powerful reminder that there is a new beginning available in everything. Just as a year starts and ends, so do the various journeys of our lives.

---

# # # **1. The Past**

**Isaiah 43:18–19** tells us that who we were in the past should not determine who we are right now.

Because of **Original Sin**, we once lived in bo***ge, but we were redeemed by our Lord Jesus. Now, our true identity is found in Christ (**Galatians 2:20**). Our "old self" has been dealt with; our past cannot and should not define who we are in Him. Remember, our redemption isn't an excuse to be a worse version of ourselves, but a calling to live for His glory (**Ephesians 2:10**).

# # # **2. Former Failures**

Of course, we all experience failure. 2025 may have been your most difficult year yet, but do not let it dictate your future.

We often become discouraged by the mistakes we’ve made. Sometimes we blame God, and other times we blame ourselves too harshly. The Bible teaches us to leave the past behind and press on toward the goal (**Philippians 3:13–14**). To **"press on"** means to stay focused on your life's direction—following God’s will regardless of what you have been through—because we are looking forward to the greatest prize: our Lord Jesus Christ.

# # # **3. Living in the Present and Holding the Future**

After Moses fled Egypt for Midian because of a murder, God called him to lead His people out of bo***ge. After many rebuttals and questions, God asked Moses, **"What is in your hand?"** God then instructed Moses to throw down his staff, and it became a sign of His power. Similarly, Paul—a former persecutor of Christians—was called on the road to Damascus to become an apostle to the Gentiles (**Acts 9:26–27**).

If we look only at the past, we will likely end up full of either arrogance or regret. But if we focus on what God has placed in our "present," we will head toward His perfect plan.

---

# # # **Conclusion**

Let this New Year be a reminder that we can always start anew. Whether it is in our studies, our careers, our relationships, or—most importantly—our ministry, God is with us. Last year might have been hard, and this year could be harder, but remember that we have **Immanuel** (God with us). In Him, we can do all things.

This is a summary of justification (being made right with God).

It explains how the Catholic Church and Protestant churches understand it.

1. Catholic Church (Impartation)

The Catholic Church teaches that righteousness is put inside a person.

God’s grace changes the heart and life of the person.

This change starts at baptism.

Good actions help the person grow more righteous.

Becoming righteous is a long process in life.

2. Protestant Church (Imputation)

Protestant churches teach that Jesus’ righteousness is given to the believer.

God declares the person righteous.

The person is still a sinner, but God sees the person as righteous.

Good actions are a result, not a condition.

Becoming righteous happens one time by faith.

Unbelievers can sometimes be more ethical and moral than believers.

So we must understand well what the Bible means by repentance and holiness.

1. Repentance

Repentance is not just feeling sorry for doing something wrong.

Repentance means changing the direction of life,
from living for myself to living toward God.

Repentance is not deciding to fix myself by my own effort.

It is admitting before God that I am a sinner.

Repentance happens first in the heart and the mind,
before any change in behavior.

So repentance is more than ethics or morality.

It is the beginning of a new relationship with God.

2. Holiness

Holiness is not living better than other people.

Holiness means living as someone who belongs to God.

Holiness does not start from human effort.

It starts from a new identity that God gives first.

A holy life is a response to the grace already received.

So holiness means living in this world
while recognizing God as Lord.

The direction of a believer’s life
is not for oneself.

A believer is not someone
who is just trying to become a better person.

A believer is a person
whose direction has changed toward God.

If I am still the owner of my life,
that person is not a believer.

The life of a believer
is not about success.

The life of a believer
is about standing before the will of God.

A believer follows the Word
when it agrees with the Word,
and throws away
what goes against the Word.

And this life
is not a life that ends with “I believe well by myself.”

The direction of a believer’s life
is set toward evangelism.

Evangelism
is not a program.

It is not the job
of a few passionate people.

Evangelism is
the normal direction of life
for those who are saved.

A believer’s vision
does not stop at their own neighborhood,
but goes toward all nations.

World evangelization
is not a slogan of mission groups.

It is
the direction of God’s plan of salvation.

A believer
sets their heart
on where God sends them.

In any way,
the whole life
is used for the gospel.

Denying oneself,
taking up one’s cross,
holding the gospel,
going toward the nations,
following Christ and proclaiming Him.

This is the life of a believer,
and this is its direction.

The first person who clearly taught the doctrine of original sin was Augustine
(AD 354–430).

Before Augustine, some church fathers talked about the fall of humans and the spread of sin,
but Augustine was the first theologian to clearly explain original sin as a doctrine.

Augustine taught original sin for several important reasons.

First, he disagreed with Pelagius’ view of human nature.
Pelagius taught that humans are born good
and that sin comes only from personal choices.

Augustine believed this teaching did not match the Bible or real human life.

Second, Augustine wanted to protect the absolute need for God’s grace.

If humans are born good, God’s grace becomes only a choice, not a necessity.

Augustine taught that humans are born under sin,
so salvation is completely the work of God’s grace.

Third, Augustine explained original sin to give a reason for infant baptism.

In the early church, infant baptism was already practiced.

Augustine taught that even babies are under sin
and need forgiveness through baptism.

On this point(About infant baptism), the Catholic Church and Protestant churches have different views.

Fourth, Augustine organized the Bible’s teaching in a clear way.

He brought together verses like Romans 5 and Psalm 51
to teach that Adam’s sin affected all people.

Augustine taught the doctrine of original sin to defend the truth
that sin is found in all people
and that God’s grace is absolutely necessary for salvation.
