ST. EZEKIEL MORENO IN THE PHILIPPINES???
Did you know that St. Ezekiel Moreno, a Spanish Augustinian Recollect missionary, spent around 15 years of his priestly life in the Philippines?
He did not merely visit our countryโhe served, ministered to the people, learned to speak Tagalog fluently, and gave himself generously to the Filipino people. From Manila to Palawan, Mindoro, Iloilo, Las Piรฑas, Batangas, Negros, and Cavite, his missionary journey left a remarkable spiritual legacy.
๐ MANILA | 1870
On February 10, 1870, Ezekiel arrived in Manila and stayed at the Recollect convent and formation house of San Nicolรกs in Intramuros, where he completed his theological formation. On June 2, 1871, he was ordained a priest in Manila by Archbishop Gregorio Melitรณn Martรญnez.
๐ PALAWAN | 1872
In February 1872, he was appointed chief missionary, chaplain of the penal colony, and military chaplain for the expedition that established a military stronghold and penal colony in Puerto Princesa. He also helped establish the foundations of Inagawan and Aborlan. During his missionary work, he contracted malaria, which nearly cost him his life.
๐ MINDORO | 1873
He was later assigned to Calapan, Mindoro, his first parochial ministry. It was here that he learned and perfected his Tagalog, enabling him to communicate more closely with the Filipino people he served.
๐ ILOILO | MID-1870s
In the mid-1870s, Ezekiel traveled to Jaro, Iloilo, where he received his tonsure and minor orders from the Dominican bishop.
๐ LAS PIรAS | 1876
In June 1876, he began his ministry in Las Piรฑas, where his pastoral charity became even more evident. The community suffered droughts, a smallpox outbreak that claimed the lives of many children, and the devastating fire of 1879. Through these trials, Ezekiel showed particular concern for the poor and marginalized.
๐ BATANGAS | 1879
He was assigned to Santo Tomรกs, Batangas, in 1879. His ministry there was so appreciated that townspeople even wrote to Manila asking that his transfer be suspended when he was recalled to serve as general preacher of the Order.
๐ NEGROS
Ezekiel later traveled to Talisay, Negros Occidental, where he underwent hydrotherapeutic treatment for anemia under the care of his fellow Recollect, Father Fernando Cuenca.
๐ CAVITE | 1882โ1885
From 1882 to 1885, he administered the Recollect haciendas of Bacoor and Imus. During the devastating cholera epidemic, he ministered in the barrios of Mambog and Salinas in Bacoor, where thousands perished. He remained close to the sick and dying, ensuring that as many as possible received the sacraments.
๐ต๐ญ For St. Ezekiel Moreno, the Philippines was not simply a place of missionโit became a significant part of his life and priestly ministry.
A saint from Spain who learned our language, walked among our people, served our communities, and shared in their sufferingsโSt. Ezekiel Moreno truly became one of the missionaries whose story is deeply connected with the Philippines.
St. Ezekiel Moreno, pray for the Philippines, pray for the sick, and pray especially for all cancer patients. ๐๐ต๐ญ
