and I think I first understood that
through my mother.

God must have given mothers
a language
the rest of us
will never fully understand.

she knows me
in ways I never learned to explain.
such as what I need
before I even say a word.

she hears it
in the way I close the door,
in the silence I bring home,
in the small changes
I donโ€™t notice in myself.

I think about all the ways
she has loved me quietly,
in meals made even when she was tired,
in patience stretched through difficult days,
in sacrifices I only understand now
that I am older.

she may not love loudly,
but she loved in detail.
in attention.
in knowing.
in staying.
and maybe that is what makes it sacred,
because her love did not wait for me
to be understood by the world,
she understood me first.

to be loved is to be known,
and I was known first
by my mother.

and perhaps that is because
God placed a piece of His love
inside every mother,
so every daughter and every son
could know
what unconditional love feels like,
and learn to recognize it
before it is ever gone.

Today, we thank God for the gift of mothers and mother figures who reflect His love, grace, and care in our lives. Your sacrifices, legacy, and unwavering faith are a blessing to your families, our church, and our community.
