On the feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1841, Don Bosco met the first boy of his oratory in rather special circumstances. He literally saved the boy from the fury of the sacristan who was driving him out because he did not know how to serve at Mass. The boy's name was Bartolomew Garelli: 16 years old, an orphan. Don Bosco started with a "Hail Mary" and a catechism.

Forty two years later, he said: "All the blessings that have been showered on us from heaven were the fruits of that first 'Hail Mary'."
