(๐Ž๐ง ๐’๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ)

This distinction is critical.
Self-pity can sometimes disguise itself as humility.

A person may repeatedly say:
โ€œI am nothing. I am useless. Nobody cares about me. I can do nothing right.โ€

This may sound humble, but it can actually be another form of self-occupation.
Why?

Because the person is still thinking primarily about self.
True humility does not constantly stare at its own misery.
True humility looks toward God.

St. Teresa explicitly warns that distorted self-knowledge can lead to cowardice and discouragement. She insists that the soul should fix its eyes on Christ and the saints so that self-knowledge does not make it "base and cowardly."

This is a profound Carmelite insight.
False humility says:
โ€œI am worthless.โ€
True humility says:
โ€œWhatever good is in me comes from God, and whatever is lacking in me I entrust to His mercy.โ€

The first can produce despair.
The second produces freedom.

This is one of the most important principles in Carmelite spirituality.
St. Teresa repeatedly teaches that self-knowledge is indispensable. But she also warns that excessive concentration upon oneself can become spiritually unhealthy.

In the Interior Castle, Teresa teaches that the soul must know itself, but it should not remain permanently occupied with itself. She compares humility to the bee that gathers honey, while reminding the soul to leave the hive and contemplate God's greatness.
This provides an excellent spiritual diagnosis of self-pity.

Self-knowledge says:
โ€œI recognize my weakness.โ€
Self-pity says:
โ€œMy weakness is all I can see.โ€
Self-knowledge says:
โ€œI have been wounded.โ€
Self-pity says:
โ€œMy wound defines me.โ€
Self-knowledge says:
โ€œI have sinned.โ€
Self-pity says:
โ€œI am hopeless.โ€
Self-knowledge says:
โ€œI need God's mercy.โ€
Self-pity says:
โ€œGod should have treated me differently.โ€

Teresa's remedy is to look toward God.
When we contemplate God's greatness, goodness, truth, and mercy, we begin to see ourselves correctly. Teresa's understanding of humility is fundamentally connected with truth: the soul stops exaggerating both its virtues and its misery.
This is why genuine Carmelite humility is not humiliation.
It is truth before God.
