DIOCESE CREATES A NEW VICARIATE IN CALAMBA

During the Mass for the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of the mother parish in Poblacion, Calamba, Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit, Jr. announced that the Vicariate of St. John the Baptist, which comprises the parishes within Calamba City, will be divided to give way to the establishment of a new vicariate.

According to Canon 374, §2 of the Code of Canon Law, a vicariate is established “to foster pastoral care by means of common action.” It is headed by a vicar forane, a priest chosen from among the parish priests.

Prior to the division, the Vicariate of St. John the Baptist was the largest among the 13 vicariates in the diocese, comprising 11 parishes. In order to provide more effective pastoral care, it became necessary to divide the vicariate according to the geographical location of the parishes.

The Vicariate of St. John the Baptist will retain the following parishes:

* St. John the Baptist Parish
* Holy Trinity Parish (Pansol)
* San Vicente Ferrer Parish (Real)
* San Pedro Calungsod Parish (Villa de Calamba)
* St. Mary Magdalene Parish (Looc)
* Sts. Peter and Paul Parish (Aplaya)

Meanwhile, the newly established Vicariate of St. Joseph the Worker will comprise the following parishes:

* St. Joseph the Worker Parish (Canlubang)
* San Isidro Labrador Parish (Makiling)
* Our Lady of Fatima Parish (Lawa)
* Mary Help of Christians Parish (Mayapa)
* San Agustin Parish (Parian)

BEFORE ANOTHER CHILD GETS HURT

The recent incidents of violence in schools across the Philippines have saddened us deeply. As educators of the young in the spirit of Don Bosco, we cannot simply ask how to make our schools more secure. We must also ask how to make our schools more human.

For Don Bosco, education was never merely about instruction. It was about presence. He believed that young people flourish when they are known, loved, accompanied, and guided.

In light of these events, the Salesians of Don Bosco encourage schools to strengthen five essential areas:

✅ Activate the Child Protection System
✅ Strengthen Anti-Bullying Prevention and Reporting
✅ Control Entry and Prohibited Items
✅ Increase Adult Presence and Early Intervention
✅ Practice Emergency and Crisis Response

While policies and protocols are important, Don Bosco reminds us that the greatest safeguard for a young person is a caring community. A teacher who notices. A parent who listens. A friend who speaks up. An educator who accompanies.

The challenge before us is not only to build safer schools, but to build schools where no young person feels alone, forgotten, rejected, or unheard.

Every child deserves to feel safe. Every child deserves to belong.

Let us work together to ensure that our schools remain homes that welcome, parishes that evangelize, schools that prepare for life, and playgrounds where young people can grow in joy and hope.
