In many images of St. Vincent Ferrer, he is often depicted with wings.
One story behind this image says that while he was preaching before great multitudes, he suddenly assumed wings and flew away. It was said that he had gone to assist someone who was suffering or in urgent need. After helping the person, he would then return in the same manner and continue his sermon as if he had never left.
The other storyโmore widely knownโconnects his wings not to a physical miracle, but to his mission and message. St. Vincent was famous for preaching about the โlast thingsโ: Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell, urging people to repent and prepare their souls. Through this powerful style of preaching, many were deeply moved, turning away from sin, returning to the sacraments, and converting their lives back to God.
While preaching at Salamanca before several thousand listeners, St. Vincent declared: โI am the Angel announced by St. John in the Apocalypse, that Angel who shall preach to all peoples, to all nations, in every tongue, and say to them: โFear the Lord, and give Him honour, because the hour of His judgment is come.โโ
This, he believed, was the task entrusted to him when the Lord Jesus Christ, together with St. Francis and St. Dominic, appeared to him on October 3, 1396, in Avignon.
Whether understood as a miraculous sign or a symbol of his divine calling, the wings of St. Vincent Ferrer remain a powerful reminder of the urgency of his preaching and his role as the Churchโs fearless messenger of repentanceโone whose words brought countless souls back to God.
