In preparation for the sacred Season of Lent and the celebration of the Paschal Mystery, the Archdiocesan Commission on Liturgy has issued the official Liturgical Guidelines for Lent and the Sacred Paschal Triduum.

These guidelines were prepared under the direction of Rev. Msgr. Florencio P. Salvador Jr., SSJV, SLD, Director of the Archdiocesan Commission on Liturgy, and approved by Most Rev. Jose Cabantan, D.D., Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro.

We humbly invite all clergy, religious, and liturgical ministers to read, reflect on, and faithfully observe these norms, so that our celebrations may truly express the unity, reverence, and beauty of our Catholic faith.

That in all things,
God may be glorified.

With the start of a new year, even with all the lights and celebrations around us, the Church points us to a simple image, a Mother holding her Child. Mama Mary reminds us that every new beginning needs care, tenderness, and trust in God.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. In Mama Mary, we see what real care looks like. It is faithful and life giving. It is the kind of care that holds families and hearts together day by day.

Many of us begin the New Year with much to be thankful for. There is food on the table, people to celebrate with, music, laughter, and familiar faces around us. Through Mama Mary, we are also led to notice those who start the year with less, those facing hunger, loss, or loneliness.

This moment invites us to empathy and compassion. In Mama Mary, we see a kind of care that is calm and tender, shown through attentiveness and a willingness to share.

It also matters that the Christmas Octave ends as the New Year begins. The joy of Christmas continues and flows into the days ahead, shaping how we choose to live.

As we step into the New Year, may we carry this kind of care with us. May our celebrations be joyful and our hearts remain open.

Liturgical and non-liturgical symbols encouraged by the Church, such as the Advent Wreath, Belen, and Posadas, already speak deeply in their original form. They do not need added layers of trivial or overly secular elements. When we add less, we see more. Beauty needs no noise.

Each day of the Octave continues the joy of Christmas Day itself. The Church does not rush past the mystery of Christโ€™s birth. She stays with it.

Throughout the Octave, the liturgy remains festive. White vestments are worn, the Gloria is sung daily. The focus remains on the mystery of the Incarnation, God truly entering human history.

The number eight has deep meaning in Scripture and tradition. It points to new creation and new life. While seven completes the old creation, the eighth day opens something new. By celebrating eight days, the Church proclaims that Christโ€™s birth begins a new order of grace.

The ๐™‚๐™š๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง๐™–๐™ก ๐™‰๐™ค๐™ง๐™ข๐™จ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™‡๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™œ๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ก ๐™”๐™š๐™–๐™ง ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ก๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™–๐™ง explain that the Octave of Christmas extends the solemnity of the Nativity across these days, which is reflected in the prayers and readings of the Roman Missal.

Within the Octave, the Church also celebrates saints closely linked to the mystery of Christโ€™s coming (Saint Stephen, Saint John, and the Holy Innocents) and it concludes on January 1 with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, reminding us that the Incarnation took place within a real human family.

The Christmas Octave reminds us that the joy of Christmas is too great for just one day, and the mystery of God-with-us deserves time to be lived and prayed.

In many parishes, there is a beautiful Christmas tradition where the image of the Baby Jesus is brought around the parish and into homes, offices, and workplaces. This practice is not meant to be superstition or merely a fundraising activity. Its true meaning is hospitality to Christ, a reminder that Jesus desires to enter our everyday lives.

When the image is brought in, some people express their devotion by kissing it or by placing it gently on a childโ€™s head. These gestures usually come from sincere faith and love for Jesus. When done with reverence, they can be meaningful signs of affection, similar to kissing a crucifix or an icon.

At the same time, it helps to remember that the image itself is not magical. Placing it on a childโ€™s head should not be treated as a ritual that automatically gives protection or good fortune. Blessing comes from God, not from the object or the gesture.

What truly matters is the heart behind the action. These customs are beautiful when they lead us to prayer and a deeper welcome of Christ into our homes and lives, not when they slip into superstition.

Many of us grew up hearing that if we complete the nine Aguinaldo Masses, our wish will come true. It is a superstition we smile about, and maybe some people you go to church with are still hoping it works.

But the Church invites us to something deeper than making a wish.

Both the Prayer of the Faithful (Universal Prayer) and the homily are elements of the Liturgy of the Word. For this reason, the Church gives them a specific structure and placement during Mass.

The Prayer of the Faithful (Universal Prayer) belongs at the ambo, immediately after the Creed and before the Presentation of the gifts. The priest gives the short introduction from the presiderโ€™s chair, then the intentions are proclaimed from the place of the Word.

The GIRM teaches that the intentions are read at the ambo or at โ€œanother suitable placeโ€ (GIRM 71). This phrase does not necessarily refer to the commentatorโ€™s stand. โ€œSuitable placeโ€ means a location that maintains the unity of the Liturgy of the Word and the dignity of the rite, not a microphone placed apart from the altar or ambo. The commentatorโ€™s stand is not a liturgical place; it is a functional furniture.

Likewise, the homily may not be delayed until after the Post-Communion Prayer. The GIRM states clearly that the homily follows the Gospel (GIRM 65โ€“66). Once the Post-Communion Prayer is said, the Mass moves into the concluding rites, and the moment for preaching has passed.

Honoring these norms protects the dignity and meaning of the liturgy, helping the faithful see the Word proclaimed clearly, in the place the Church intends.
