Do Good Deeds Count? Can They Save You?
Yes, but not apart from faith. π―
Good deeds do not replace faith, and faith is never meant to stand alone. In Scripture, true faith is always alive, and its life is proven by action.
James makes this unmistakably clear:
βBut someone will say, βYou have faith and I have works.β
Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.β
β James 2:18 π
Faith that does nothing is not biblical faith. It is belief without obedience.
Ebed-Melek: Courage That God Remembered
When judgment was approaching Jerusalem, fear ruled the city. Jeremiah was thrown into a cistern to die abandoned for speaking Godβs truth. Most stayed silent. One man did not.
Ebed-Melek, a foreigner and servant, risked his position and life to defend a prophet no one else would stand for. With ropes and old rags, he carefully lowered help into the pit and gently lifted Jeremiah out.
βSo they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and took him out of the cistern.β
β Jeremiah 38:13 π
When Jerusalem finally fell, God did not forget that quiet act of faith-filled courage.
βI will surely save youβ¦ you shall not fall by the swordβ¦ because you have put your trust in Me, says the Lord.β
β Jeremiah 39:18 π
Lesson: God sees faithful obedience, even when it comes from unseen hands and humble hearts.
Rahab: Faith That Acted βοΈ
Rahab was known for her past, but God saw her faith. When Israelβs spies entered Jericho, she hid them, protected them, and declared her belief in the God of Israel before the walls ever fell.
βThe Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.β
β Joshua 2:11 π
Her faith was not just spoken it acted.
βJoshua spared Rahab the pr******te, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the messengers.β
β Joshua 6:25 π
Rahab was not only spared; she became part of the lineage of Christ (Matthew 1:5).
Lesson: Faith that acts can redeem a past and rewrite a future.
Noah: Obedience That Saved a Household βοΈ
Noah believed God and he built the ark when no rain had fallen.
βBy faith Noahβ¦ prepared an ark for the saving of his household.β
β Hebrews 11:7 π
His faith was proven through years of obedience.
Lesson: Faith listens, obeys, and endures even when obedience looks foolish to the world.
The Good Samaritan: Faith in Action βοΈ
Jesus Himself taught that love for God must be expressed through action.
βGo and do likewise.β
β Luke 10:37 π
The Samaritan did not just feel compassion he acted, and Jesus made him the example of true righteousness.
Lesson: Faith is proven by mercy.
Final Truth β¨
Good deeds do not save us by themselves.
But saving faith is never alone.
True-Faith produces obedience.
True-Faith produces courage.
True-Faith produces love in action.
True-Faith produces godly righteousness.
True-Faith produces Holiness.
As Scripture declares:
βYou see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.β
β James 2:24 π
And the warning remains clear:
βFaith without works is dead.β
β James 2:26 π
Moral Lesson π
We are saved by grace through faith but the faith that saves is the faith that works.
