February 2: Presentation of the Lordโ€”Feast
As faithful Jews who obeyed the Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph performed two ritual acts that the law prescribed after the birth of the firstborn sonโ€”Maryโ€™s ritual purification and Jesusโ€™ dedication. The Presentation of the Lord is celebrated forty days after Christmas, marking the day that Mary and Joseph would have brought Jesus into the Temple. Though Mary was pure and free from sin from the moment of her conception, and though the Son of God did not need to be redeemed, Mary and Joseph fulfilled these ritual obligations.

At the heart of this celebration is the encounter of Simeon and Anna with the Christ Child in the Temple. Simeon was the first to understand and proclaim Jesus as the Savior of the World. He also prophesied that this salvation would be accomplished by a sword of sorrow that would pierce Maryโ€™s Immaculate Heart. Anna, a prophetess, also came forward and โ€œgave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalemโ€ (Luke 2:38). In the ritual acts in the Temple, Jesusโ€™ divine mission was made manifest to the world.

We are invited to participate in Maryโ€™s ritual purification and Jesusโ€™ ritual redemption. Each of us is unworthy of entering the true Temple of the Lord in Heaven, yet we are invited to do so in union with Mary, our Blessed Mother. It was her consent to Godโ€™s will that opened the door of Godโ€™s grace to us all. By allowing Jesus to be born in our hearts by grace, we spiritually become Jesusโ€™ โ€œmother.โ€ With her, we are now able to appear before God, purified and holy in His sight.

In presenting Jesus in the Temple, Saint Joseph also redeems us by presenting to the Father all who strive to live in union with Jesus. The hope is that, like Simeon and Anna, others will see God alive within us and experience the Savior of the World through us.

Ponder, today, your soul being the new temple of the Lord, and acknowledge your need to be purified and offered to the Father in Heaven. As Christ continues to enter into the temple of your soul, pray that He will shine forth for others to see so that, like Simeon and Anna, they will encounter our Lord within you.

My saving Lord, Your loving parents offered You to Your Father in the Temple in accordance with the Law. In that offering, our souls are purified and offered to Your Father. May my soul always radiate Your light from within me. Jesus, I trust in You.

St. John Bosco was born during a drought and famine in a time of reconstruction, following the end of the Napoleonic Wars. His father died when he was two years old, leaving his devout mother to raise him and his two elder brothers in poverty as subsistence farmers and shepherds.

O Saint John Bosco, you prized the virtue of purity highly and strove with all your might to foster it in the hearts of young and old. Pray for us that, inspired by your example, we may nurture it in our hearts and minds and may act effectively to defend our young people against a culture pervaded by s*x and violence.

Saints Timothy and Titusโ€™ Story

What we know from the New Testament of Timothyโ€™s life makes it sound like that of a modern harried bishop. He had the honor of being a fellow apostle with Paul, both sharing the privilege of preaching the gospel and suffering for it.

Timothy had a Greek father and a Jewish mother named Eunice. Being the product of a โ€œmixedโ€ marriage, he was considered illegitimate by the Jews. It was his grandmother, Lois, who first became Christian. Timothy was a convert of Paul around the year 47 and later joined him in his apostolic work. He was with Paul at the founding of the Church in Corinth. During the 15 years he worked with Paul, he became one of his most faithful and trusted friends. He was sent on difficult missions by Paulโ€”often in the face of great disturbance in local churches which Paul had founded.

Timothy was with Paul in Rome during the latterโ€™s house arrest. At some period Timothy himself was in prison (Hebrews 13:23). Paul installed him as his representative at the Church of Ephesus.

Timothy was comparatively young for the work he was doing. Several references seem to indicate that he was timid. And one of Paulโ€™s most frequently quoted lines was addressed to him: โ€œStop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnessesโ€ (1 Timothy 5:23).

Titus has the distinction of being a close friend and disciple of Paul as well as a fellow missionary. He was Greek, apparently from Antioch. Even though Titus was a Gentile, Paul would not let him be forced to undergo circumcision at Jerusalem. Titus is seen as a peacemaker, administrator, great friend. Paulโ€™s second letter to Corinth affords an insight into the depth of his friendship with Titus, and the great fellowship they had in preaching the gospel.

When Paul was having trouble with the community at Corinth, Titus was the bearer of Paulโ€™s severe letter and was successful in smoothing things out. Paul writes he was strengthened not only by the arrival of Titus but also โ€œby the encouragement with which he was encouraged in regard to you, as he told us of your yearning, your lament, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even moreโ€ฆ. And his heart goes out to you all the more, as he remembers the obedience of all of you, when you received him with fear and tremblingโ€ (2 Corinthians 7:7a, 15).

The โ€œLetter to Titusโ€ addresses him as the administrator of the Christian community on the island of Crete, charged with organizing it, correcting abuses, and appointing presbyter-bishops.

Reflection

In Titus we get another glimpse of life in the early Church: great zeal in the apostolate, great communion in Christ, great friendship. Yet always there is the problem of human nature and the unglamorous details of daily life: the need for charity and patience in โ€œquarrels with others, fears within myself,โ€ as Paul says. Through it all, the love of Christ sustained them. At the end of the Letter to Titus, Paul says that when the temporary substitute comes, โ€œhurry to me.โ€
