Have you ever sinned and then found yourself avoiding God?

You pray less.
You open your Bible less.
You feel uncomfortable worshiping.
You know you should come to God, but somehow, you keep your distance.

Not because you don't need Him.
But because you feel ashamed to face Him.

And perhaps one of the most dangerous things sin can do is not only make us fall, but make us hide from the very God who can restore us.

Think about Adam and Eve.

Before they sinned, they were naked, and they were not ashamed.

They walked with God.
They knew His presence.
They lived in unbroken fellowship with their Creator.
But then they disobeyed.

And everything changed.

Genesis 3 says their eyes were opened, and they realized that they were naked.

Nothing had changed about their bodies.
But something had changed in their hearts.

The people who once walked freely with God were now afraid of His presence.

And that is what sin often does.

We sin.
Then we distance ourselves from God.

We tell ourselves that we will come back when we feel better.
When we have changed.
When we are no longer ashamed.

But look at what happened in Eden.

God was not asking because He did not know where Adam was.
He knew.

The question was not about Adam's location.
It was about his condition.

And perhaps that is the question God still asks us when we have sinned:
โ€œWhere are you?โ€

Not because He doesn't know.
But because He wants us to recognize where our sin has taken us.

Because sometimes we become so focused on what we have done that we fail to notice what sin is doing to our relationship with God.

That is the part we should not miss.

God did not leave Adam and Eve hidden among the trees.
He called them out.
He brought their sin into the light.
He asked questions.
He confronted them with what they had done.

And God's confrontation was not the opposite of His mercy.
It was part of His mercy.

Because you cannot repent from what you refuse to acknowledge.
You cannot surrender what you keep hiding.
You cannot experience the healing of grace while insisting that there is nothing wrong.

Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is show us the very thing we have been trying hardest not to see.

And Adam and Eve did something else that we often do.

They tried to cover themselves.
They made fig-leaf coverings.

Sin was exposed, and their first instinct was to cover it themselves.

Isn't that familiar?

We fail, and then we try to compensate.
We feel guilty, so we become more religious.
We know something is wrong, so we try harder to look right.
We hurt someone, but instead of admitting it, we explain ourselves.
We know we have fallen, but we would rather protect our image than confess our sin.

But fig leaves can cover shame.
They cannot remove sin.
They can hide the problem from people.
They cannot hide it from God.

And God knew their covering was insufficient.
So He provided garments for them.

And here the gospel begins to shine through Genesis 3.

It pointed toward humanity's need for something only God could provide.

Adam and Eve needed more than something to hide their shame.
They needed redemption.

And that is where Christ enters the picture.

Jesus did not come to teach guilty people how to pretend they are innocent.
He came to save guilty people.
He took our sin and shame upon Himself so that we could be reconciled to God.
He became the answer to the problem that began in Eden.

And suddenly, Genesis 3 becomes more than a story about the first sinners.
It becomes a mirror.

Maybe you have done exactly what Adam and Eve did.
Maybe you sinned, and then you ran.
Maybe you have been avoiding prayer because you feel unworthy.
Maybe you have stopped opening your Bible because you are afraid of what it might reveal.
Maybe you still attend church, still smile, still serve, still worshipโ€”but somewhere inside, your heart is hiding.

Maybe you keep telling yourself,
โ€œI will come back to God when I get myself together.โ€

But that is not the gospel.

You don't come to God because you have already fixed yourself.

So what should we do when God reveals something wrong in our lives?

Don't run farther from God.
Run to Him.

If there is a habit that is pulling you away from God,
don't keep protecting it.

Surrender it.

Don't wait until you feel worthy to come to God.
Don't wait until you have become better.
Don't wait until the shame disappears.

Come while you are still struggling.
Come because you need grace.

Because the answer to sin is not better hiding.

It is confession.
It is repentance.
It is surrender.
It is returning.

God knows where you are.
He knows what you have done.
He knows what you have been hiding.
And still, He comes looking.

But He did more than come looking.

He came to save.

We ran because of sin.
He came because of love.

We tried to cover our shame.
He bore our shame.

We could not save ourselves.
So God provided a Savior.

And perhaps this is the heart of the gospel:

The God we ran from is the God who came near to save us.

So when God reveals your sin, don't run.
He's calling you back.
