Most Rev. Jose Rapadas III, D.D., is the fifth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Iligan and one of the youngest Filipino bishops appointed in recent years. He was born in Tondo, Manila, on July 12, 1972, and was later raised in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. He took his college studies in Philosophy at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, where he finished his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1992, graduating cm laude. Bishop Rapadas pursued his priestly formation at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary, where he completed his theological studies, graduating Magna Cum Laude and serving as class valedictorian before being ordained to the priesthood in 1999.
He later earned a Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology from the Loyola School of Theology of Ateneo de Manila University. Throughout his years in ministry, he served in various pastoral, academic, and diocesan leadership roles, including parish vicar, coordinator of diocesan social pastoral ministry, seminary professor, rector of Saint Joseph College Seminary, director of catechesis for family and life, professor of religious studies at the University of Zamboanga, and formator at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary, his alma mater.
Before his episcopal appointment, Bishop Rapadas served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay. On June 13, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Iligan, succeeding the late Bishop Elenito Galido. He was ordained to the episcopacy at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral in Ipil in a solemn celebration attended by bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful from different parts of the country.
Known for his humility, pastoral warmth, and dedication to formation and evangelization, Bishop Rapadas continues to inspire clergy and laity alike through his joyful and compassionate service to the Church. As shepherd of the Diocese of Iligan, he encourages the faithful to become courageous witnesses of Christ through prayer, unity, and active participation in the mission of the Church.
