1 Pt 1:10-16
Mk 10:28-31
In the Gospel, St. Peter reminds Jesus that the apostles had left everything to follow Him. Jesus assures them that no sacrifice made for Him is ever lost. Whatever we surrender to Him is repaid a hundredfold - not always in wealth or comfort, but in deeper joy, stronger faith, spiritual family, and eternal life.
But Jesus also mentions "persecutions." Following Him is not a path of ease. It requires holiness, and holiness requires sacrifice, courage, and perseverance.
St. Peter tells us in the 1st Reading that Old Testament prophets longed to understand the salvation that is now revealed in Christ. Even the angels are amazed at the wisdom and mercy of God's saving plan. We have received a tremendous gift, but also a great responsibility.
St. Peter calls us to holiness because God Himself is holy. Today many want the rewards of heaven without the demands of discipleship. Yet to follow Jesus means letting go of whatever keeps us from Him. What we lose for Christ is temporary. What we gain in Him is eternal.
