Foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Born in Catalonia, Spain, she overcame many difficulties in her youth and eventually became a teacher at Lerida. Desirous to enter the religious life, she failed to win entry into the convent at the advice of her spiritual director, decided to launch her own congregation. On January 27, 1872, at Barbastro, Spain, she began the Little Sisters of the Poor, called the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Age. Considerable zeal, she had founded by the time of death more than fifty houses for her congregation. Beatified in 1958, she was canonized in 1974 by Pope VI.

St. Bartholomew, a 1st-century apostle and one of the twelve disciples, is referenced in the synoptic gospels and Acts. His name, derived from a patronymic meaning "son of Tolomai," is believed to be linked to Nathanael, who is noted in John as being from Cana and described by Jesus as an "Israelite...incapable of deceit." According to the Roman Martyrology, he preached in India and Greater Armenia, where he was ultimately flayed and beheaded by King Astyages. Tradition locates the event at Abanopolis, near the Caspian Sea, and it is also believed that he preached in Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. The Gospel of Bartholomew, regarded as apocryphal, was condemned by the decree of Pseudo-Gelasius. His feast day is celebrated on August 24.

Archdeacon and companion of St. Donatus. Andrew and his sister, St. Bridget the Younger, were born in Ireland of noble parents.They were educated by St. Donatus, and when Donatus went on a pilgrimage to Italy, Andrew accompanied him. In Fiesole, through a miracle, Donatus was elected bishop. Andrew was ordained the archdeacon of Fiesole, serving Donatus for forty-seven years. He also founded a monastery in Mensola, Italy. Andrew died shortly after Donatus, but his sister, St. Bridget the Younger, was carried by an angel to his bedside, all the way from Ireland.

O Glorious St. Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Son of God. With your friend, St. John, you remained with Jesus, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. Just as you led your brother, St Peter, to Christ and many others after him, draw us also to Him. Teach us how to lead them, solely out of love for Jesus and dedication to His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the Cross and carry our daily crosses without complaint, so that they may carry us to God the Almighty Father. Amen.

John Eudes, born on November 14, 1601, in Normandy, France, joined the Congregation of the Oratory of France in 1623 after studying at Jesuit colleges. He became a notable preacher, opposing Jansenism and caring for plague victims. In 1641, he founded a refuge for fallen women, and later established the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the Eudists) in 1643, focusing on seminary education. Despite opposition, he founded several seminaries and gained papal approval for his refuge sisters in 1666. Eudes contributed to the devotion to the Sacred Heart and wrote significant texts on the subject before his death on August 19, 1680. He was canonized in 1925, and his feast day is celebrated on August 19th.

Clare, born around 1268 in Montefalco, Italy, joined a convent of Franciscan tertiaries and became the abbess after her sister Joan's death. Leading an austere life devoted to the Passion of Christ, she passed away in 1308 with an image of the Cross found on her heart; her body remained incorrupt. Canonized in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII, her feast day is celebrated on August 17th. St. Clareโ€™s life exemplifies a call to prayer and dedication without expectation of special favors from God.

O Saint Clare, virgin of the Cross, in whose heart the Lord engraved the mystery of His Passion, teach us to make our hearts His dwelling place.
