Happy first Sunday of Advent ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

November 30 | FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Today we begin a new season in our liturgical calendar. The Church year does not begin on January 1 but with the season of Advent. Therefore, for us Christians, today is a joyful day as we start a new year.

The word Advent comes from the Latin word โ€œAdvenireโ€ which means โ€˜to come toโ€ or โ€œAdventusโ€ which means โ€œcomingโ€. The Greek word for Advent is โ€œParousiaโ€, commonly used to refer to the second coming of Christ. For us Christians, the season of advent anticipates the coming of Christ.

There are four Sundays of Advent Season which lead us to the celebration of Christmas. Each Sunday has a theme and a color (3 purple, 1 Pink). The candles represent the four weeks of advent. The color purple signifies penance and sacrifice while the color pink signifies joy. First Sunday of advent symbolizes HOPE. Second Sunday symbolizes FAITH. Third Sunday or GAUDETE SUNDAY symbolizes JOY. And Fourth Sunday symbolizes PEACE.

The season of Advent is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to the coming of Jesus Christ. This is a season wherein we prepare ourselves through penance, prayer and sacrifice in waiting for His coming. The Season of Advent therefore is a season of WATCHFULNESS or โ€œvigilant waitingโ€, that prepares us to welcome the mystery of the Word Incarnate.
