29 April | Saint Catherine of Siena
The value Catherine makes central in her short life and which sounds clearly and consistently through her experience is complete surrender to Christ. What is most impressive about her is that she learns to view her surrender to her Lord as a goal to be reached through time.
She was the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful, and intensely religious person. Catherine disappointed her mother by cutting off her hair as a protest against being overly encouraged to improve her appearance in order to attract a husband. Her father ordered her to be left in peace, and she was given a room of her own for prayer and meditation.
She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent the next three years in seclusion, prayer, and austerity. Gradually, a group of followers gathered around herโ€”men and women, priests and religious. An active public apostolate grew out of her contemplative life. Her letters, mostly for spiritual instruction and encouragement of her followers, began to take more and more note of public affairs. Opposition and slander resulted from her mixing fearlessly with the world and speaking with the candor and authority of one completely committed to Christ. She was cleared of all charges at the Dominican General Chapter of 1374.
Her public influence reached great heights because of her evident holiness, her membership in the Dominican Third Order, and the deep impression she made on the pope. She worked tirelessly for the crusade against the Turks and for peace between Florence and the pope.
In 1378, the Great Schism began, splitting the allegiance of Christendom between two, then three, popes and putting even saints on opposing sides. Catherine spent the last two years of her life in Rome, in prayer and pleading on behalf of the cause of Pope Urban VI and the unity of the Church. She offered herself as a victim for the Church in its agony. She died surrounded by her โ€œchildrenโ€ and was canonized in 1461.
Catherine ranks high among the mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1939, she and Francis of Assisi were declared co-patrons of Italy. Pope Paul VI named her and Teresa of Avila doctors of the Church in 1970. Her spiritual testament is found in The Dialogue.
Saint Catherine of Siena, pray for us!

CALLED. FORMED. SENT.

Are we just maintaining, or are we on a mission? This was the powerful challenge from Most Rev. Herman G. Abcede, RCJ, D.D., in our final talk for the 29th DVP National Convention.

He urged us to shift from a "maintenance mentality" to a "missionary mentality," constantly asking: Who has not yet heard? Where is Christ not yet loved?

A vocation that isn't missionary, Bishop Herman reminded us, becomes self-referential and loses its purpose. The call isn't just to be called. Itโ€™s to be formed in communion, sent on mission, and joyfully spent for others.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’ช

28/04/2026

Why does the call to vocation feel so difficult for young people today?

In his talk "Called in Communion: A call to Relationship," Bishop Jose Allan Dialogo suggested that it's a crisis of relationship.

"The challenge is not that God has stopped calling but that the noise of modern life makes it harder for His voice to be heard... The crisis of vocation today is often a crisis of relationship. Many young people know about God but donโ€™t know God personally."

In a world full of crises, young people are asking, "Is it safe to say yes?" But Bishop Allan offered a shift in perspective: vocation is not an escape from crisis, but an entry into it with Christ. It is actually in the midst of turmoil that we discover that communion is stronger than division, hope is stronger than despair, and Christ's love is stronger than war. As he reminded us, "Pag may dinadaanan na krisis, lalong tumatatag ang bokasyon."

We discover that this is the true meaning of communion: to stand with the suffering. And this is the true meaning of vocation: to bring Christ there. ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ™

FACILITATORS OF ENCOUNTER ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’™

Most Rev. Raul B. Dael, D.D., Bishop of Tandag, touched hearts and left important points for vocation promoters of today in his talk: "Journeying Together - Walking the Path of Vocation."

He shared how he would often hear vocation promoters talk so much about their congregation, their charism, their programs, but not about Jesus. He emphasized that our role is to be facilitators of encounter and witnesses of faith: to recognize, to accompany, and to help awaken what God is already doing.

After all, vocations do happen in a "personal encounter with God who meets every person in their own story, in their own wounds, in their own desires."

Day 40 |
Lenten Observance Challenge

Attend the Evening Mass of the Lordโ€™s Supper and spend a few moments praying in front of the altar of repose.

โ€œHe loved them to the end.โ€ โ€” John 13:1

After forty days of prayer, sacrifice, and conversion, we arrive at the beginning of the Sacred Triduum.

Tonight, Jesus gives everything.
He gives His Body and Blood in the Eucharist.
He gives an example of humble service by washing the feet of His disciples.

He gives a new commandment:
โ€œLove one another as I have loved you.โ€

And how does He love?
To the end.

Not halfway.
Not when it is easy.
Not when it is deserved.
But completely.

Holy Thursday reveals the heart of Christ:
a love that serves,
a love that gives,
a love that remains.

This is the love we have been preparing for throughout Lent.
Not just to admire it,
but to receive it,
and to live it.

Am I willing to love others as Christ has loved me?

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of the Eucharist and the example of Your love. As I enter into these sacred days, help me remain with You. Teach me to love as You love... faithfully, humbly, and completely. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Lord, I thank You for walking with me throughout these forty days.
For the moments of grace, for the struggles that drew me closer to You,
for the quiet invitations to change and to trust.
Receive all that I have offered:
my prayers, my sacrifices, my efforts to follow You.
Purify them and unite them to Your perfect offering.

Prayer for the Sacred Triduum
Lord Jesus, as I enter into these holy days,
keep me close to You.
Stay with me in the Upper Room,
that I may learn to love and to serve.
Stay with me on Calvary,
that I may understand the depth of Your sacrifice.
Stay with me in the silence of the tomb,
that I may learn to trust even in darkness.
Prepare my heart for the joy of the Resurrection,
and lead me from death to life. Amen.

Day 39 |
Lenten Observance Challenge

Offer one concrete sacrifice today (time, comfort, or preference) for love of Jesus.

โ€œWhat are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?โ€ โ€” Matthew 26:15

Judas goes to the chief priests and asks a chilling question:
โ€œWhat are you willing to give me?โ€

In that moment, a decision is made.

Not suddenly...but gradually, through small compromises, hidden choices, and a heart that slowly drifted away.

Betrayal rarely begins in one step.
It grows quietly.
It deepens unnoticed.

Judas chooses silver over the Savior.
A transaction over a relationship.

And yet, at the same table, Jesus still offers Himself.
Holy Wednesday places before us a choice:
What do I choose โ€” Christ, or something else?

Not in words, but in actions.
Not in theory, but in daily decisions.

Every attachment, every compromise, every hesitation reveals what we value most.
But unlike Judas, we are still given time.

Time to return.
Time to choose again.
Time to love.

What am I holding onto that I am placing before Christ?

Lord Jesus, do not let my heart drift away from You. Help me choose You above all things. Give me the grace to let go of anything that leads me away from Your love. Amen.

Day 38 |
Lenten Observance Challenge

Pray today for someone who has hurt or betrayed you.

โ€œAmen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.โ€ โ€” John 13:21

At the Last Supper, Jesus is troubled. In the presence of His friends, He reveals a painful truth: โ€œOne of you will betray me.โ€

Betrayal cuts deep โ€” especially when it comes from someone close.

Judas betrays.
Peter denies.
The others flee.

And yet, Jesus does not stop loving them.

He does not withdraw.
He does not retaliate.
He continues to give Himself.

Holy Tuesday invites us to face not only our own unfaithfulness, but also the wounds caused by others.

We all carry memories of being hurt, misunderstood, or betrayed. These wounds can harden the heart if left unattended.

But Christ shows another way:
not denial of pain,
but transformation through love.

To pray for someone who has hurt us is not weakness.
It is freedom.
It is choosing to love as Christ loves.

Who in my life do I find difficult to forgive or pray for?

Lord Jesus, You loved even those who betrayed You. Give me the grace to forgive and to pray for those who have hurt me. Heal my heart and make it more like Yours. Amen.
