Jesus prayed in John 17:20–23:
“That they may all be one… so that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
Yet today we see divisions, denominations, conflicts, and even church splits.
So why hasn’t this prayer fully come to pass?
Here are the biblical reasons — and the hope behind them.
1. Jesus’ prayer was not for organizational uniformity
Jesus did not pray that everyone would belong to one denomination, structure, or style of worship.
He prayed for spiritual unity, not institutional sameness.
“That they may be one as We are one.” (John 17:22)
The Father and the Son are one in nature, purpose, love, and mission, not because They are the same Person.
Unity ≠ sameness.
2. Unity is given by Christ — but practiced by people
Unity is a gift, but it must be guarded.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 4:3
Jesus already created unity through His cross:
“He Himself is our peace… making the two one.”
— Ephesians 2:14
But believers must choose to walk in it.
The problem is not Christ’s prayer —
the problem is human will.
3. Human pride and flesh resist unity
The Bible is honest about why division happens:
Pride (1 Corinthians 1:12–13)
Desire for control
Offense and unforgiveness
Doctrinal arrogance
Loyalty to leaders more than Christ
Even the early church struggled:
“I follow Paul.”
“I follow Apollos.”
“I follow Cephas.”
— 1 Corinthians 1:12
Division is not new.
It is the work of the flesh, not the Spirit.
4. Unity cannot exist without truth
Jesus also prayed:
“Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.”
— John 17:17
Biblical unity is not compromise.
We are united in Christ and truth, not in error.
Some separations exist because the gospel itself must be protected:
“If anyone preaches another gospel… let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:8
So not all division is sinful —
but hatred, pride, and competition are.
5. Jesus’ prayer is being fulfilled — but progressively
Just like the Kingdom of God:
It is already here
But not yet complete
Wherever believers love one another,
serve together,
pray together,
and exalt Christ above names and titles —
Jesus’ prayer is happening.
Across nations, denominations, and cultures,
millions are united by:
One Savior
One Spirit
One gospel
One mission
“There is one body and one Spirit.”
— Ephesians 4:4
6. The prayer will be perfectly fulfilled in glory
Complete unity will happen when Christ returns.
“Then we shall all be perfectly one.”
— Revelation 7:9–10
No denominations in heaven.
No divisions.
Only one Lamb and one redeemed family.
In summary
Jesus’ prayer has not failed.
✔ Unity was accomplished at the cross
✔ Unity is maintained by obedience
✔ Unity is damaged by human flesh
✔ Unity is growing globally
✔ Unity will be perfected at His return
The real question is not:
“Why hasn’t Jesus’ prayer come to pass?”
But:
“Am I helping fulfill it — or hindering it?”
