One of the most beautiful and mysterious signs in the lives of the saints is the “odor of sanctity” – a sweet, supernatural fragrance (often like roses, lilies, violets, or incense) that has been reported emanating from their bodies, clothing, or the rooms where they prayed...
..especially at the moment of death or when their remains were later exhumed.
👉 Far from the stench of ordinary decay, this heavenly aroma is recognized in Catholic tradition as a visible sign of God’s grace, holiness, and the soul’s perfect union with Christ.
This phenomenon is well-documented and often linked to the gift of incorruptibility. Here are a few notable examples:
🌸 St. Teresa of Ávila (Doctor of the Church)
At the moment of her death in 1582, a sweet perfume filled the entire monastery. Even months later, when her grave was opened, the same heavenly scent lingered for nine months.
🌸 St. Thérèse of Lisieux (“The Little Flower”)
When she died in 1897, a powerful scent of roses filled the infirmary and persisted for days afterward – a beautiful sign for the saint who promised to spend her heaven “letting fall a shower of roses.”
🌸 St. Bernadette Soubirous (of Lourdes)
Her body was exhumed multiple times and found incorrupt. Pilgrims praying before her glass casket in Nevers, France, have repeatedly reported a growing, unmistakable fragrance of flowers – known as the “odor of sanctity.”
🌸 St. Polycarp (early Church martyr, d. 155)
When he was burned at the stake, his body did not smell of charred flesh but gave off the sweet aroma of frankincense – witnessed by the entire crowd.
The Theology Behind It?
This is rooted in Sacred Scripture:
“For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved…” (2 Corinthians 2:15)
“And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us… an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness.” (Ephesians 5:2)
The saints teach us that just as sin brings corruption and stench, God’s grace transforms us into a “pleasing odor” offered to the Father through Christ. The fragrant and often incorrupt bodies of the saints are powerful signs that “death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54).

May the odor of sanctity stir in our souls today! Let us strive to become that “aroma of Christ” in a world that often reeks of sin and despair.
St. Teresa of Ávila, St. Thérèse, St. Bernadette, and all holy ones who smelled of heaven — pray for us! 🙏
