On this blessed May 1st, our parish community gathered in prayerful unity for the First Novenary Mass of Flores de Mayo, beginning this special month of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The celebration was presided over by Rev. Fr. Elvin Miraflor, who led the faithful in prayer and reflection on God’s mercy and the loving presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As flowers were offered, so were simple prayers, quiet hopes, and grateful hearts.

A solemn and meaningful highlight of the celebration was the procession of children dressed as angels. They collectively formed the words β€œAVE MARIA” as they made their way toward the altar.

As we continue celebrating Mary in this month, may we grow little by little in faith, choosing kindness, humility, and love each day. May His mercy guide us to live with compassion, kindness, and sincere service to others.

May this season draw us closer to God in ways that are real and lasting.

MAY 2β€”THE FIRST SATURDAY OF MAYMay 2, the First Saturday of the month, is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Maryβ€”a beautiful expression of honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary’s pure and loving heart, totally centered on God. This devotion reminds the faithful of Mary’s interior life: her deep faith, her silent sacrifices, and her unwavering β€œyes” to the Lord. To contemplate her Immaculate Heart is to reflect on a heart that loves perfectly, suffers with compassion, and remains faithful even in trials.

This devotion is closely connected to the message of the Our Lady of Fatima apparitions, where Mary invited the faithful to practice the First Saturday devotion as an act of reparation for sins committed against her. The Church encourages simple yet meaningful practices on this dayβ€”going to Confession, receiving Holy Communion, praying the Rosary, and meditating on its mysteries. These acts are not merely obligations, but offerings of love meant to console the heart of a Mother who continually intercedes for her children.

As we journey through the Month of Mary, the First Saturday devotion becomes a special opportunity to renew our relationship with her. It calls us to slow down, enter into prayer, and entrust our intentions, struggles, and hopes to her maternal care. In drawing closer to Mary’s Immaculate Heart, we are gently led to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where true peace, mercy, and grace are found.

AN INVITATION TO JOIN IN THE FLORES DE MAYO

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The month of May is a beautiful gift to usβ€”a time when the Church invites us to draw closer to our Blessed Mother through the Flores de Mayo.

I warmly invite all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Cebuβ€”families, children, youth, and communitiesβ€”to actively join and participate in the Flores de Mayo in your parishes and chapels. Let us offer flowers not only with our hands, but also with our heartsβ€”through prayer, sacrifice, and simple acts of love.

I also express my heartfelt gratitude to our Lourdesians and to all organizers and volunteers who generously dedicate their time and effort to make this beautiful devotion possible in our communities. Your love for Mary is truly a gift to the Church.

In honoring Mary, we learn how to love Jesus more. In walking with her, we are gently led closer to her Son.

May our devotion this month renew our faith, strengthen our families, and make our Church more alive in love.

Come, let us honor our beloved Mother.

+ALBERTO S. UY
Archbishop of Cebu

HAVE A BLESSED FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH

This First Friday of May invites us to pause and turn our hearts to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christβ€”a Heart that burns with love, mercy, and compassion for each one of us. The First Friday devotion is a gentle call to return to Him, to make reparation, and to trust in His boundless mercy. In a world that often leaves us tired and wounded, His Heart becomes our refuge, our healing, and our peace.

On this sacred day, we are encouraged to offer our prayers more deeply, to examine our hearts, and, if possible, to receive the Eucharist in a spirit of love and reparation. It is a time to lay down our burdensβ€”our sins, worries, and strugglesβ€”and allow His Sacred Heart to renew and restore us. Through this devotion, we are reminded that no matter how far we may feel, His love remains constant and ever-present.

With the loving guidance of the Virgin Mary, who always leads us closer to her Son, we entrust this day and this month to Him. Let us come with humble and open hearts as we pray:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of a new month, a new beginning filled with grace and hope. As the Church honors Blessed Virgin Mary in a special way this May, draw our hearts closer to her Immaculate Heart. Teach us, like her, to say β€œyes” to Your will with trust and humility, even when the path is uncertain. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
La Virgen Divina Pastora, pray for us!
St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us! πŸ™β€οΈ

MAY 1ST IS HERE! πŸ™βœ¨

This first day of May opens a special season of grace in the Churchβ€”a time when we are invited to reflect more deeply on our faith, our work, and our relationship with God. It is not just the start of a new month, but a reminder that every new beginning is a chance to return to Him with a sincere heart.

Today, we honor Saint Joseph, a model of quiet strength and faithful service. He did not seek recognition, yet his life speaks powerfully to all of us. In his daily labor as a carpenter, he showed that work is not merely a way to earn a livingβ€”it is a way to serve God and care for others. Through him, we are reminded that even in ordinary routines, God is present. Every effort, every sacrifice, and every act done with love has value in His eyes.

We also turn to La Virgen Divina Pastora, who gently leads us like a shepherd guiding her flock. She reminds us that we are never alone in our journey. In moments of confusion, struggle, or uncertainty, she calls us to trust and to keep walking in faith. Her presence in this celebration is especially meaningful as we begin the Month of Mary, inviting us to stay close to her through prayer and devotion.

At the same time, this day being the First Friday draws our hearts to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a powerful reminder of Christ’s endless loveβ€”patient, forgiving, and always ready to welcome us back. No matter how far we may feel, His heart remains open. This devotion invites us to respond with love: to pray more deeply, to forgive more freely, and to live more compassionately.

May this May 1st be more than a celebrationβ€”may it be a renewal. A renewal of our strength in work, our trust in Mary’s guidance, and our devotion to the loving Heart of Jesus. As we begin this new month, may our lives be filled with purpose, grace, and a deeper desire to walk with God each day. πŸŒΉπŸ™βœ¨
