*First Holy Communion* in the Catholic Church is a big milestone where a baptized Catholic receives the Eucharist - the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ - for the first time.
# # # *3 Key parts of it:*
1. *What it is*
After First Confession, kids around age 7-8 usually receive Communion for the first time. The bread + wine become Jesus through transubstantiation. So in Communion, Catholics believe they’re literally receiving Jesus into themselves.
2. *Why it matters*
Jesus said “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” - John 6:54.
It’s one of the 3 Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism → Eucharist → Confirmation.
It means the child is now fully participating in Mass and can receive Jesus in the Eucharist regularly.
3. *The preparation*
Before it, kids go through 1-2 years of catechism classes. They learn about the Mass, the Real Presence, prayers, and make their First Confession first. That’s why they “confess, then receive”.
# # # *What the day looks like:*
Kids wear white - white dress for girls, white shirt/suit for boys. White = purity + new life in Christ. There’s usually a special Mass, photos, and a celebration after with family.
*In short*: First Communion = “First time meeting Jesus personally in the Eucharist.” It’s the start of a lifelong relationship with Him through the sacrament.
