Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, Bernadette reported seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary 18 times at the Grotto of Massabielle, located at Lourdes, France. Saint Bernadette Soubirous was 14 years old when the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place. First Apparition is on February 11, 1858 and the last Apparition is on July 16, 1858.
During one Apparition, Mary told Bernadette:
"๐ ๐ผ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ผ๐พ๐๐๐ผ๐๐ ๐พ๐๐๐พ๐๐๐พ๐๐๐."
Bernadette did not understand what those words meant because she had very little religious education. She simply memorized the phrase and repeated it exactly to her parish priest, Father Dominique Peyramale.
Mary also instructed her to dig in the ground, where a spring of water appeared. That spring still flows today, and many pilgrims visit it seeking healing and spiritual renewal.
After the apparitions, Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. She lived a quiet life of prayer, humility, and service, never seeking fame or wealth because of the apparitions.
The apparitions at Lourdes were later investigated by the Church and officially recognized as worthy of belief in 1862. Today, Lourdes is one of the world's most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites, known for prayer, healing, and devotion to Mary.
When her body was exhumed years later during the process leading to her canonization, it was found to be remarkably well preserved. Today, her body rests in a glass shrine at the Convent of Saint Gildard in Nevers, where many pilgrims come to pray.
