To all the saints in the Lord's Recovery,
We would like to inform you regarding the strong earthquake that struck the northern part of Cebu province. On the evening of 30 September, at precisely 9:59 pm, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck the coast of Bogo City in Cebu, more than. 720,000 people (over 200,000 households) were affected. This ranks as one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the region.
The epicenter was located near Bogo City in northern Cebu. The intense shaking vertically and horizontally caused significant destruction-buildings collapsed, roads were damaged, and power outages which affected thousands. Neighboring municipalities such as Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remegio, and even the whole province of Cebu, reaching Leyte, Bohol, Negros Island and many parts of Mindanao, felt the severe impact of this quake.
This was a tectonic earthquake, occurring at a shallow depth of about 5 kilometers, which contributed to the strength felt across a wide area. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOLCS), the quake was caused by an offshore fault.near the epicenter that has been dormant for 400 years. To date, more than 11,000 aftershocks have been recorded.
Due to this, many of our brothers and sisters have been affected-their houses were destroyed, affecting 160 families. Many saints are currently living in tents. Furthermore, the following meeting halls were partly damaged: the meeting hall in Malingin, Church in Medellin, the Church in Tabuelan, and the Church in San Remegio. The Church in Bogo City, a four-story building which served as a vital center for blending and training, was severely damaged and all the full-time serving ones were evacuated for their safety.
We're currently asking a structural engineer to assess and evaluate whether we can retrofit the building or have to demolish it.
