Legion of Mary Lolomboy Curia - Nuestro Señor Jesucristo Parish

Legion of Mary Lolomboy Curia - Nuestro Señor Jesucristo Parish O Mary, conceived without sin.Pray for us who have recourse to you The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin, Ireland on 7 September 1921.

It is a lay catholic organisation whose members are giving service to the Church on a voluntary basis in almost every country. The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is interm

ingled with reports and discussion. Persons who wish to join the Legion must apply for membership in a Praesidium. The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each individual. The members participate in the life of the parish through visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospitals and through collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish. Every legionary is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary.

THE LEGIONARY DISCIPLINE

Have you ever wondered why the Legion is so organized?

The Legion's structure is actually patterned after the Roman Legion, one of the most effective and disciplined organizations in history. Just as the Roman Legion maintained order and unity through discipline, the Legion of Mary relies on spiritual discipline to achieve its mission.

A successful organization—whether an army, a sports team, or a corporation—requires discipline. The same is true for the Legion. This discipline is summarized in the Standing Instructions, which call every active member to:

*Attend the weekly Praesidium meeting faithfully.
*Daily recitation of the Catena Legionis and the Rosary.
*Perform substantial apostolic work.
*Maintain confidentiality regarding matters discussed during meetings.

In practical terms, active Legionaries are expected to:

*Carry out approximately two hours of direct apostolic work each week, usually in pairs.
*Attend weekly meetings, considered a primary expression of loyalty and commitment to the Legion.
*Pray the Catena daily to remain spiritually united with Our Lady and the worldwide Legion family.

These practices are not merely rules—they are tools for spiritual growth. Through faithful observance of Legion discipline, members develop stronger character, deeper faith, and a greater capacity to serve others. It teaches Legionaries to set aside personal pride, recognize Christ in those they visit, and work in harmony with fellow members.

The strength of the Legion does not come from numbers alone—it comes from disciplined members united in prayer, service, and devotion to Our Blessed Mother.

Monday Bulletin | DID YOU KNOW?

THE VEXILLUM

The Vexillum was conceptualized by Frank Duff, the founder of the Legion of Mary, as a direct adaptation of the standard carried by the ancient Roman legions. It physically represents the spiritual mission of the organization, visualizing the conquest of the world by the Holy Spirit acting through Mary and her followers.

The Vexillum is structured with the following key design elements:

The Staff and Crossbar: Modeled after the Roman military standard to represent the discipline, unity, and militant structure of the Legion. The crossbar forms the shape of a cross, signifying that Legionaries fight under the banner of Christ.

The Dove (Holy Spirit): At the intersection of the staff and crossbar sits a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. This was added to reflect Frank Duff’s deep devotion to the Holy Spirit and the belief that all Legionary work is guided and sustained by Him.

The Medal of the Immaculate Conception (Miraculous Medal): Suspended from the dove's beak is an oval frame bearing the image of Mary as she appears on the Miraculous Medal. This signifies that the Holy Spirit acts through Mary, and that Legionaries operate under her patronage.

The Globe: Beneath the medal lies a representation of the world. It serves as a visual reminder of the Legion's ultimate mission: to conquer the entire world for Christ.

The Inscription: Below the crossbar, a banner reads "Legio Mariae" (Latin for "Legion of Mary").

The Color Red: The background fabric and halo of the Virgin Mary are colored red, representing the Holy Spirit and the fiery nature of charity.

The Holy Spirit operates always with her. Come a little further to the feast of Pentecost, that tremendous occasion when the Church was launched upon its mission. Mary was there. It was by her prayer that the Holy Spirit descended on the Mystical Body and came to abide in it with all his “greatness, power, glory, victory and majesty.” (1 Chron 29:11) Mary reproduces in respect of the Mystical Body of Christ every service which she rendered to his actual Body.

This law applies to Pentecost, which was a sort of new Epiphany. She is necessary to the one as she had been to the other. And so of all divine things to the end: if Mary is left out, God’s Plan is not conformed to, no matter what one’s prayers and works and strivings may be. If Mary is not there, the grace is not given. This is an overpowering thought. It may provoke the question: “Do those who ignore or insult Mary receive no graces?” They do, indeed, receive graces, for failure to acknowledge Mary may be excused on grounds of utter ignorance. But what a sorry title to Heaven! and what a way of treating her who helps us! Moreover, the graces which come in such circumstances are but a fraction of what should flow, so that one’s life’s work is largely failing.

THE BEGINNING: THE LEGION OF MARY IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Legion of Mary in the Philippines traces its humble beginnings to a small sewing room in Manila — a modest start that would later spark one of the most influential Marian apostolates in the Far East.

On July 21, 1940, the first Legion of Mary praesidium in the Philippines was officially established at the Hospicio de San Jose in Manila. More significantly, it was recognized as the very first praesidium in the entire Far East, marking a historic milestone in the worldwide growth of the Legion.

The praesidium was founded by Fr. Manuel de Gracia, CM, together with pioneering legionaries Joaquina Lucas and Pacita Santos. It was given the beautiful title “Purification of Our Lady.”

Few people realize that the first meetings of the Legion in the Philippines were held not in a grand chapel or large parish hall, but in the Obrador, the sewing room of the Hospicio de San Jose located on Isla de Convalesencia in Manila, accessible through Ayala Bridge.

From this simple location, fifteen active members gathered in prayer and apostolic commitment, unaware that their small group would eventually help spread the Legion throughout the nation and beyond. An interesting historical detail is how Fr. Manuel de Gracia first encountered the Legion of Mary. He reportedly discovered the organization through a copy of The Boston Pilot, a Catholic newspaper. Inspired by what he read, he contacted the Legion headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, requesting official materials and guidance for establishing the movement in the Philippines.

The Legion’s growth in Manila was extraordinary. Within just over a year, the organization had already expanded to 14 active praesidia in the Manila area by December 1941. However, the outbreak of the Second World War would soon interrupt many Church activities across the country. Despite the hardships and uncertainties of the war years, the Legion of Mary survived and continued its mission through the faith and perseverance of its members.

What began in a humble sewing room in Manila in 1940 has now become part of a global apostolate reaching millions of members worldwide. The story of the first Philippine praesidium stands as a reminder that great missions often begin quietly—with a few faithful individuals willing to answer God’s call through the guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today, generations of legionaries continue the mission first entrusted to those fifteen pioneering members of “Purification of Our Lady,” carrying forward a legacy of holiness, evangelization, and Marian devotion across the Philippines and beyond.

On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children named Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta in Fatima, Portugal. She delivered a message calling for prayer, repentance, and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners. Our Lady strongly emphasized the daily praying of the Holy Rosary as a powerful devotion for peace in the world. She also warned against sin and encouraged a return to God with sincere hearts. These apparitions became a powerful reminder of Mary’s role as our loving Mother and intercessor.

The apparitions continued for six consecutive months, with increasing attention from both the faithful and the curious. On October 13, 1917, a great miracle known as the Miracle of the Sun was witnessed by thousands of people. The sun appeared to dance, spin, and change colors in the sky, confirming the truth of Our Lady’s message. During this final apparition, Mary revealed herself as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This revealed her deep connection to devotion and protection for all who follow her Son.

In this final message, Our Lady presented the Brown Scapular as a sign of consecration and devotion. The Brown Scapular is a sacramental that symbolizes Mary’s protection and a commitment to live a faithful Christian life. Those who wear it are reminded to imitate Mary’s virtues of humility, purity, and obedience to God. It also calls the faithful to constant prayer and trust in God’s mercy. Through the Brown Scapular and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, we are invited to grow closer to Christ under Mary’s loving care.

PRAYER
O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the most holy Rosary, you were pleased to appear to the children of Fatima and reveal a glorious message. We implore you, inspire in our hearts a fervent love for the recitation of the Rosary. By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption that are recalled therein may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask, through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for us!

82nd Death Anniversary of Venerable Edel Quinn

Edel Quinn was born in Kanturk, Co. Cork, Ireland on 14 September 1907. As a girl her ambition was to enter a contemplative convent, but she was prevented from doing so by ill-health. At the age of 20 she joined the Legion of Mary in Dublin and was an enthusiastic member.

In 1932 she became seriously ill and spent a long period in hospital. She resumed her activities in the Legion but for the remainder of her life was impaired due to that illness.

In 1936 Edel was appointed Legion of Mary Envoy to East Africa – to countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Mauritius. She encountered obstacles in this pioneering work and overcame them despite her poor health and harsh conditions. She had great faith in God’s love and a limitless trust in the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Edel was gifted with a clear practical mind. She had notable organising ability, an indomitable will and a depth of warmth and human empathy. Her infectious joyousness of spirit never failed her. These qualities quickly won everyone to her side.

Although often working alone and in a state of ill-health and exhaustion, Edel established the Legion of Mary on a firm footing in the countries she visited – even as far as Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Hundreds of Legion branches and higher councils of the Legion were established – meaning that thousands of Africans were mobilised in the service of the Church.

After eight years of heroic labour, Edel died in Nairobi on 12 May 1944 where she is buried in the Missionaries’ Cemetery.

The Diocesan Process, the first step towards her beatification, was set in motion in 1957 by the Archbishop of Nairobi. She was declared Venerable on 15 December 1994 by Pope John Paul II.

The following extracts from her private notes give an indication of her spiritual life:

‘What boundless trust we should have in God’s love! We can never love too much; let us give utterly and not count the cost. God will respond to our faith in Him …’

‘Mary loves us because we are Christ’s legacy to her. Let us give ourselves completely to her to be made all His, to be consumed unceasingly, to be spent for Christ.’

‘To suffer for love of Our Lord is my very greatest joy.’

Edel’s favourite prayer:

‘Dear Jesus make Thyself to me, a living bright reality.
More present to Faith’s vision keen, than any outward object seen,
More dear, more intimately nigh than e’en the sweetest earthly tie.’
