The gospel on this third Sunday of Easter leads us to the road to Emmaus. Where it is more than a simple account of two disciples traveling together, it mirrors our own walk with Christ.
They were leaving Jerusalem filled with grief, doubt, and disappointment, thinking that their hopes in Jesus had completely fallen apart. In their moment of deep discouragement, Jesus came close and accompanied them, though they did not realize it at first.
Jesus reaches out to us in our confusion, worries, and struggles. He remains with us even when we are unaware of His presence, yet the road to Emmaus gently reveals that He is never absent from our journey.
As they walked, Jesus opened the meaning of the Scriptures to them, showing that their suffering was part of a larger divine purpose. In the same way, God continues to enlighten us through His Word, helping us find direction in times of uncertainty. What once looked like defeat slowly becomes a doorway to renewed hope.
The turning point happens when they share a meal and Jesus breaks the bread, allowing them to finally recognize Him. Their experience leads them to that deep realization expressed in their own words:
This moment reflects the Holy Eucharist, where Christ still makes Himself known to us today. After this encounter, their sorrow is replaced with joy, and they rush to tell others. They showed that a true meeting with Jesus always transforms the heart and sends us forth in faith.
