What Do You Have?
Read 2 Kings 3:1 through 5:27; Luke 21:25 through 22:13

Most people in need focus on what they don’t have instead of what they do have. When the widow went to Elisha for help, he redirected her thinking to what she did have.

Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil” (2 Kings 4:2).

How amazing that God would take the little oil the widow had and use it to save her boys from slavery and meet her other needs as well.

Many times, people overlook their gifts and resources. They think what they have is insignificant. However, God is willing to bless and use things others ignore.

The widow didn’t argue with Elisha. She didn’t say, “Why do you want me to borrow jars?” or “I’m too shy to go door-to-door and sell oil.” She obeyed, and God met her need.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Lord, show me the hidden resources in my life that You want to use to meet my needs and those of others.

MEMORY VERSE AND DAILY BIBLE READING (May 18-24, 2026):
Luke 4:18-19
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

What Do They Hear?
Read 1 Kings 7:1 through 8:66; Luke 18:1–17

“As for the foreigner who does not belong to Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your name—for they will hear of Your great name and Your mighty hand and Your outstretched arm” (1 Kings 8:41–42).

When the public sees people identified as Christians on the news, displaying signs with hateful messages, God’s message of love is lost. When people hear conversations between Christians that sound judgmental, they picture a condemning God rather than a loving God. In contrast, when believers back up their words about God with loving actions, those who hear will be inclined to listen to more.

Solomon and the people of Israel talked of God’s faithfulness and mighty works on behalf of their nation. The good news traveled beyond their country. Today’s verse is part of Solomon’s prayer, which included those people who would come from afar because they heard of the great things God had done. Do your words cause people to want to know more about a loving God?

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Words that glorify God will impact the world.

MEMORY VERSE AND DAILY BIBLE READING (May 11-17, 2026):
James 4:7-8a
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.

Kindness Begets Kindness
Read 2 Samuel 19:1 through 20:26

A couple faithfully served God for many years, opening their home and showing kindness to others. Many people came to know Jesus and grow in Him through their influence. Shortly before retirement, the people in their church did a home makeover for them. Those who helped were happy that they were able to repay this couple for the years of kindness and caring they had shown.

When King David fled from his son Absalom, Barzillai provided for the king. After his reign was reestablished, David offered to take care of Barzillai in return for his kindness. Barzillai asked that David bestow his favor on his son Kimham instead.

“Here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish” (2 Samuel 19:37).

Paying it forward is a modern way of expressing the idea that an act of kindness often fosters other acts of kindness. You may never know how an act of kindness may multiply to benefit many others and bring glory to God.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Lord, may the kindness I show inspire others to be kind and bring glory to You.
