MAY 17: THE CENTENARY OF THE CANONIZATION OF SAINT THERESE OF THE INFANT JESUS BY HIS HOLINESS, POPE PIUS XI

Today, the entire family of Carmel celebrate with great joy the hundredth anniversary of the Church’s solemn declaration of the sanctity of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus, during the Jubilee Year of 1925.

On May 17, 1925 Pope Pius XI solemnly canonized Therese of the Child Jesus and Hoky Face a Saint of the Church. Here is a part of his long address that day, “…Today, faithful flock of Christ, the Church offers a new and most noble model of virtue for all of you to contemplate unceasingly. For the peculiar characteristic of the sanctity to which God called Thérèse of the Child Jesus lies chiefly in this, that having heard the Divine call she obeyed with the utmost promptness and fidelity. Without going beyond the common order of things, in her way of life she followed out and fulfilled her vocation with such alacrity, generosity, and constancy that she reached an heroic degree of virtue. In our own day, when men seek so passionately after temporal goods, this young maiden lived in our midst practicing in all simplicity and devotedness the Christian virtues in order to honor God and to win eternal life. May her example strengthen in virtue and lead to amore perfect life, not only the cloistered souls but those living in the world.
In our present needs let us all invoke the patronage of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, that by her intercession a shower of Roses, that is, of the graces we require, may descend upon us…”

Tuesday before Ash Wednesday | FEAST OF THE HOLY FACE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

Titular Feast of the Teresian Carmelites of the Holy Face and its Tertiary Carmelites

The Holy Face of Jesus as the reflection pf the image of the Father’s love for all men has been honored and venerated by the Carmelites since the beginning of the order. It was said according to lefend that it was the hermits of Mount Carmel who kept the relic of the Veil of Veronica before it became the possession of the empress Helena.

The devotion to our Lord’s holy countenance was first revealed in the latter times to the Carmelites, particularly to a Carmelite nun Sister Mary of St Peter who received from the mouth of the Lord Himself the prayer of reparation to the Holy Face, known as “The Golden Arrow”. Our Lord also appeared to Bl Pierina de Micheli and asked that a scapular be made in honor of the Holy Face, and that a feast be celebrated on the Tuesday before the beginning of the Lenten Season to make reparation for the sins of the Mardi Gras.

The Old Roman Catholic branch of the Carmelites chose the Holy Face as its titular Patron precisely to dedicate themselves to prayer and penance in tye spirit of reparation to the Holy Face of Jesus.

¡VIVA LA SANTA FAZ!

TODAY IN TERESIAN CARMELITE HISTORY: The male branch of the refomed Discalced Carmelites was founded on this day in 1568.

The friar branch of the reformed order was founded by Saint Teresa with the cooperation and willingness of a young and very quiet Juan de Santo Matía – later renaming himself as John of the Cross. The first house of the friars in Duruelo was spartan, but it was adorned by the holiness and joy of the first friars: John of the Cross, Antonio of Jesus, and Joseph of Christ.

NOVEMBER 15: COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED OF THE CARMELITE ORDER

Today, the Order of Carmel remembers with special affection members and associates of the Order who have gone ahead of us. Scripture says that it is a holy and pious thought to pray for the dead (2 Maccabees 12:46), and this admonition is taken tonheart by all Carmelites especially today.

We also hold on to the promise of the Blessed Virgin that those who die wearing her holy habit shall not suffer the fires of hell. This gives hope to each and every Carmelite that through the loving protection and the example of Our Lady, we draw closer to Christ, and thereby salvation is made sure for us.

Let us pray:

O God, bestower of pardon and lover of man’s salvation, we beseech Thy mercy, that Thou wouldst grant unto the Brothers and Sisters of our Congregation, who have departed from this world, to attain unto the fellowship of everlasting bliss, by the intercession of the Blessed Mary, Ever-Virgin, and all Thy saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

NOVEMBER 14: SOLEMNITY OF ALL THE SAINTS OF THE CARMELITE ORDER

The 14th day of November is set aside by the Order of Carmelites to honor those belonging to the Order who have been raised to the altars of sainthood. Notwithstanding those Saints who are known due to their commemorations in the universal and particular Liturgical Calendar, the Order praise the Holy Triune God for giving us models of holiness in living the life of Allegiance to Jesus Christ in the spirit of Mount Carmel. This feast invites all Carmelites and the whole of the Christian Faithful to be witnesses of holiness through the observance of the life and spirituality of the Order of Carmelites.

LET US PRAY:

All-powerful and merciful God, you give us joy each year in the commemoration of all the Saints of the Order of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. In yoyr kindness grant to us this grace: by their merits, and with the help of their prayers, we may live for you alone, meditating always on your law, denying ourselves in all things, and so merit to join them in the happiness of eternal life. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

JUEVES DE SANTA TERESA

It is a custom within the Carmels of our Holy Mother Saint Teresa to commemorate our holy foundress every Thursday. Her birth to Eternal Life was on a Thursday, and because of this her sons and daughters dedicate Thursdays in her honor to invoke her special patronage for their respective Carmels and those recommending themselves to the prayers of the different Carmels around the world.

Up until now, there are still communities observing this in spite of the destruction of piety in some Carmels due to the looming Modernism inside the Church. We Carmelite Tertiaries observing the Traditional observance of Carmel according to the spirit of our Holy Mother Saint Teresa observe this custom with fervor as a conduit of grace.

Any form of piety may be said, but the Book of Customs observed in the Carmel of Antwerp (1768) contains the pattern consisting of an Antiphon, Versicle, and Collect to be said after the Office of Prime, and the Votive Mass of Saint Teresa said “ad libitum” if not impeded by a feast of a higher rank.

℟. Amen.

Text in English:

Translation:

Antiphon: Holy Mother Teresa, look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vineyard, and perfect it, which your right hand has planted. (Easter Season: Alleluia)

V/: God will help her with His countenance.
R/: God is in her midst; she shall not be moved.

Let us pray:

Hear us, O God, our Savior, so that as we rejoice in the feast of your blessed Virgin Teresa, our mother, we may also be nourished by the heavenly food of her teaching and trained in the affection of pious devotion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
℟. Amen.

Today, we commemorate the feast of Saint Peter of Alcantara, a humble Franciscan friar known for his extreme penances and profound spiritual wisdom. In the pre-1955 liturgical calendar, his feast was celebrated with the rank of a Double Major, recognizing his significant contribution to the Church.

Born in 1499 in Alcántara, Spain, Peter embraced a life of severe austerity from an early age, seeking deep union with God. His life of prayer was marked by incredible acts of mortification—he often slept for only one and a half hours a night and lived for years without a bed, instead kneeling or standing as he prayed. One anecdote highlights his supernatural endurance: despite his rigorous fasting and penances, Saint Peter was said to be filled with constant joy, attributing this strength to God's grace alone.

Saint Teresa of Avila, the great mystic and Doctor of the Church, counted him among her most trusted spiritual directors and confessors. She spoke highly of his counsel, praising him as a man of heavenly wisdom. His guidance played a crucial role in the reform of the Carmelite order, providing her with the encouragement and spiritual insight needed for her monumental work. In her 𝐴𝑢𝑡𝑜𝑏𝑖𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑝ℎ𝑦, she recounts a vision of Saint Peter after his death, assuring her that his penances had earned him a place of great glory in Heaven.

May his example inspire us to seek holiness through humility, sacrifice, and the pursuit of a deeper union with Christ!

From the Roman Breviary:

The virgin Theresa was the daughter of a father and mother, equally honourable on account of their birth and of their godliness, and was born) at Avila (in the kingdom of Old Castile) in Spain, (on the 28th day of March, in the year of our Lord 1515. She was brought up from the dawn of her life in the fear of God, and when still only seven years old she gave a startling fore-cast of the holy earnestness of her later years. The reading of the acts of the holy martyrs so inflamed and excited her imagination, that she ran away from her father's house, with the design of going to Morocco and the hope there to lay down her life for the glory of Christ Jesus and the salvation of souls. (Upon the bridge over the Adaja, near the town,) she was met by an uncle and brought back to her mother, and was fain to slake her thirst for martyrdom by giving to the poor all the alms she could, and by other godly exercises, though still ever bewailing with tears that the highest prize had been snatched from her. (In the twelfth year of her age,) her mother died, and she besought the Most Blessed Virgin to be a mother to her in her stead. This she gained; thenceforth she lived always as a daughter under the shelter of the Mother of God. In the twentieth year of her age she withdrew herself among the nuns of St. Mary of Mount Carmel. There she dwelt for two-and-twenty years, tormented by grievous sicknesses and diverse temptations, and so bravely served her time in the hardest ranks of Christ's army, starved even of that comforting knowledge of God's reconciled love, wherein His holy children are so commonly used even upon earth to rejoice.

Strengthened in the graces of an angel, the wideness of her love embraced in its tender care the salvation of other souls as well as of her own. To this end, under the blessing of God, and the approbation of Pius IV., she set, first before women and then before men, the observance of the stern Rule of the Old Carmelites. The blessing of the Almighty and merciful Lord did indeed rest most evidently upon this design. This penniless virgin, helped by no man, and in the teeth of many that were great in this world, was enabled to build two-and-thirty houses. The darkness of unbelievers and misbelievers drew from her unceasing tears, and she willingly gave up her own body to God to be tortured, to soften the fury of His indignation against them. His own love so blazed in her heart that she attained to see an Angel run her through with a fiery spear, and Christ Himself take her by the hand, and to hear Him say Henceforth thou shalt love Mine honour as a wife indeed. At His inspiration she took the extremely difficult vow to do always that which should seem to her to be most perfect. She wrote much, full of heavenly wisdom, whereby the minds of the faithful are enkindled to long for the Fatherland above.

Earnest as were the examples of graces which she had shown, and grievous as was the state of her body, afflicted by disease, she still burnt with the desire of tormenting it. She tortured it with sackcloth, chains of spikes, handfuls of nettles, and heavy scourging. She rolled herself sometimes among thorns, and was used to cry to God “Lord! to suffer or to die.” As long as she remained exiled from the heavenly Fountain of eternal life, her life was to her a lingering death. She was eminent for the gift of prophecy, and God did indeed so pour forth His bounties upon her, that she often cried to Him in entreaty not to bless her so as to make her forget her sins. It was worn out rather by the fever of her love than by the wasting of disease that she sank upon her deathbed at Alba. She foretold the day of her own death, received the Sacraments of the Church, and exhorted her disciples to peace, love, and strictness in observing the Rule, and then her soul, like a pure dove, winged its flight to rest with God, on the 15th day of October in the year 1582, being then 67 years of age. At her death she had a vision of Christ Jesus surrounded by Angels. A dead tree hard by the cell instantly broke into foliage. Her body is untouched by corruption even unto this day, and lieth in a sort of perfumed oil, regarded with godly reverence. She was famous for miracles both before and after her death, and was numbered by Gregory XV. among the Saints.

Hear us, O God, our Savior, that as we rejoice in the feast of Blessed Teresa, thy Virgin and our mother, so we may be fed with the food of her heavenly teaching and be instructed in the affection of pious devotion.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

OCTOBER 3: SAINT THERESE OF THE CHILD JESUS AND OF THE HOLY FACE (Feast of Double Major in the calendar of the Teresian Carmels)

St. Thérèse, known for her "Little Way," was also profoundly devoted to the Holy Face, finding in it a symbol of Christ’s suffering, humility, and infinite love. In her devotion, she contemplated the wounded face of Christ, especially in His Passion, as a way to grow in love and trust. Through her prayers to the Holy Face, she sought to unite her own sufferings and sacrifices with His, finding strength in His merciful gaze.

Her devotion encourages us to seek Christ’s presence in our trials and to trust in His love and mercy, even in moments of suffering and darkness.

On September 27, 1970, Pope Paul VI declared St. Teresa of Ávila a 𝘋𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩, marking a historic moment as she became the first woman to receive this title. This recognition was a testament to her profound spiritual teachings, literary contributions, and reform of the Carmelite order, which have had a lasting impact on Catholic theology and spirituality. St. Teresa’s writings, particularly her works such as 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, offer deep insights into the soul's mystical union with God, making her a pillar of Christian contemplation and prayer.

The conferral of an honorary degree by the University of Salamanca in 1922, nearly fifty years before her declaration as Doctor, foreshadowed this recognition of her intellectual and spiritual legacy. The university, renowned for its academic and theological scholarship, acknowledged St. Teresa’s contributions as pivotal, despite the centuries that had passed since her death in 1582. This honorary degree not only emphasized her influence on theology and spirituality but also marked an important shift in recognizing women’s contributions to the intellectual life of the Church.

As we celebrate the 54th anniversary of her 𝘋𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩 declaration, it is fitting to recall these honors, which together highlight St. Teresa’s enduring legacy as both a spiritual guide and a theological force. The events at Salamanca and her Doctorate recognition serve as milestones that continue to inspire reflection on the vital role of women in the Church’s spiritual and intellectual tradition.
