𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐕𝐒. 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃: 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐃𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐌𝐀
There are leaders who are genuinely kind.
Easy to approach. Never raise their voice. Always patient when problems arise.
And yes it’s a blessing to have that kind of leader.
But we must understand this: 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑.
Sometimes, because we’re so afraid of hurting people’s feelings, we stop saying what they actually need to hear.
Here’s what that looks like:
𝐀 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬.
Instead of confronting it, we say, “It’s fine, you must be busy.”
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝.
Instead of giving feedback, we redo it ourselves to avoid offending them.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦.
Everyone sees it. But we stay silent to avoid discomfort.
At first, it feels like grace.
But over time, three things happen:
The person who needed correction never improves.
Your high-performers get demotivated. They see that effort and mediocrity are rewarded the same.
You get exhausted. Because you keep covering for everyone.
I’ve watched leaders fall into this.
They want to be liked so badly that they fear disappointing anyone.
So they allow everything. They excuse everything.
Hard conversations are delayed.
Until small problems become systemic problems.
Your job is not to be everyone’s favorite.
Your job is to build a culture where:
Expectations are clear
Accountability is fair
People are given a real opportunity to grow
