AUGUST 24 | Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle

Today, we celebrate Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus.

After receiving the Holy Spirit, Bartholomew went forth to proclaim the Gospel. Ancient Christian tradition remembers him as a missionary who preached Christ in distant lands and ultimately gave his life as a martyr for the faith. The most widely known tradition says that he was flayed and then beheaded, though the exact details of his martyrdom are uncertain.

His life reminds us that being an apostle means more than simply being chosen. It means being sent: to proclaim Christ, to live the Gospel, and to remain faithful even when the cost is great.

As young people, we may not be called to martyrdom as Bartholomew was, but we are all called to be witnesses of Christ in our families, friendships, schools, workplaces, and communities.

May Saint Bartholomew teach us to follow Jesus with courage, serve Him faithfully, and never be ashamed of the Gospel.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading | Isaiah 22:19-23
God entrusts Eliakim with authority and gives him the key of the House of David. His position is not simply an honor, but a responsibility to serve and care for God’s people.

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 138
R. Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.
The psalm is a prayer of gratitude and trust. God hears those who call upon Him, strengthens them, and never abandons the work He has begun.

2nd Reading | Romans 11:33-36
Paul stands in awe of God’s wisdom and reminds us that God’s ways are greater than our understanding. Everything comes from Him, exists through Him, and ultimately belongs to Him.

Gospel | Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus asks His disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter professes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus then entrusts Peter with the keys of the Kingdom and gives him the mission of leading and serving His Church.

Main Message

Faith is not only knowing what others say about Jesus. It is personally recognizing who Jesus is and allowing that faith to shape how we live and serve.

The readings remind us that God entrusts responsibility not simply for status, but for service. Peter receives the keys, but those keys come with a mission to help build and care for Christ’s Church.

“Who do you say that Jesus is?” And if you truly believe in Him, how is that faith shaping the way you live, serve, and lead?

AUG 22 | Memorial of the Queenship of Mary

Today, the Catholic Church celebrates Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

This feast comes eight days after the Assumption of Mary, when we celebrate that she was taken body and soul into Heaven.

Mary is Queen because God chose her to be the Mother of Jesus, the King, and gave her a unique place in His plan of salvation. Her Queenship is not about power, but about faith, humility, love, and faithful service.

As young Catholics, Mary reminds us that true greatness comes from giving our lives to God and faithfully following Jesus.

In the Gospel today, Jesus reminds us that everything begins and ends with love: love of God and love of our neighbor.

As we serve in ministry, may we remember that we are not simply filling a role or completing a task. We are serving because we love God, and through that love, we are called to love and serve His people. Even the smallest act of service can become a beautiful expression of God’s love when offered with a sincere heart.

There may be days when we feel tired, unseen, or wonder if what we do makes a difference. But Jesus reminds us of what truly matters: love is never wasted when it is offered for Him.

May our ministry always be a place where people do not only see what we do, but encounter the love of Christ through us.

Is my service flowing from love for God, and can others encounter His love through the way I serve?

AUGUST 21 | Memorial | Saint Pius X, Pope

Today we remember Saint Pius X, a humble shepherd who served as Pope from 1903 to 1914. His papal motto, “Instaurare Omnia in Christo,” means “To restore all things in Christ.”

He was especially known for placing the Holy Eucharist and sound catechesis at the heart of Christian life. He encouraged frequent Holy Communion, promoted the early reception of First Communion for children, and worked for a deeper understanding of the faith. He also supported the renewal of the liturgy and sacred music, particularly Gregorian chant.

Saint Pius X reminds us that true renewal begins when we bring our hearts and our lives back to Christ. Faith is not simply something we learn, but something we live, celebrate, receive, and share.

As we remember him today, may we ask ourselves:

What in my life needs to be restored and brought back to Christ?

May we have the courage to place Jesus at the center again, and to help others encounter Him through our faith, service, and love.

HEARTS ON FIRE | Daily Wisdom from Saint Augustine

“In miseries of this kind, the heart is healed by the solace of friends.”

St. Augustine teaches us…

We were never meant to carry every burden alone. In times of sorrow, difficulty, and uncertainty, God often brings healing through the presence of people who simply stay, listen, pray, and walk with us.

In St. Augustine’s life, we learn…

Augustine deeply valued friendship. His journey was shaped by people who shared his joys, struggles, questions, and search for truth. For him, friendship was not merely companionship. It could become a place where the heart finds comfort and where God’s goodness is experienced through another person.

This reminds us that sometimes, being there for someone is already an act of love. We may not have the perfect words or the ability to fix their problems. Our presence can be the comfort they need.

And perhaps someone around us today is carrying something quietly. We may be the friend God is asking to show up.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of friendship. Make us faithful friends who know how to listen, comfort, encourage, and remain present when others are hurting. May our friendships always lead one another closer to You. Amen.

AUG 20 | Memorial of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

Today, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church.

Saint Bernard was a Cistercian monk and abbot of Clairvaux, a gifted preacher, theologian, and mystic. He was especially known for his deep love for Jesus Christ, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and writings that led people into deeper prayer and contemplation. He was also called the “Doctor Mellifluus,” or “Honeyed Doctor,” because of the sweetness and beauty of his teaching.

Saint Bernard teaches us that a life of prayer should lead to a life of love and service. Though he desired silence and contemplation, he willingly served the Church when he was needed.

He also reminds us that holiness does not mean being perfect. He struggled with his own temperament and weaknesses, yet continued striving for humility and conversion.

August 19 | Memorial of Saint Ezequiel Moreno Díaz, Bishop

An Augustinian Recollect priest, missionary, and bishop, Saint Ezequiel Moreno Díaz lived with zeal for the Gospel, courage, compassion, and unwavering faithfulness to Christ.

He spent 15 years serving the Church in the Philippines before continuing his mission in Colombia. Wherever God sent him, he gave himself wholeheartedly to His people.

His journey reminds us that God may not show us the whole road, but He gives us enough light for the next step. Faith means trusting Him enough to keep moving.

As young people, we may still be discovering where our lives are headed. But like Saint Ezequiel, we can choose to embrace the mission God places before us, serve with love, and follow Christ with courage.

Where is Jesus leading me in this season of my life, and am I willing to follow with zeal?

HEARTS ON FIRE | Daily Wisdom from Saint Augustine

“No further would I read, nor did I need to do so, for instantly, upon reaching the end of this sentence, I was illuminated, as it were, by a light that was serenely infused into my heart, and all the darkness of doubt vanished away.”

St. Augustine teaches us…

Sometimes, God meets us at the very moment when we have reached the end of our own strength. Augustine had spent years searching, questioning, and struggling with his faith. Then, in a decisive moment, God’s grace broke through the darkness of his doubt.

In St. Augustine’s life, we learn…

Augustine’s conversion was not simply about gaining new knowledge. It was an encounter that transformed his heart. After years of resisting and searching, he finally surrendered to God’s call.

His experience reminds us that God can bring light into the places where we feel most confused, lost, or uncertain. We may not always know when that moment will come, but we can continue seeking, praying, and opening our hearts to His grace.

Sometimes, the breakthrough we are waiting for begins with simply saying: “Lord, I am ready to listen.”

Prayer
Lord, shine Your light into the places of doubt and confusion in our hearts. Give us the courage to listen when You call and the grace to surrender when You lead us toward something new. Amen.

St. Clare of Montefalco lived with one desire: to belong completely to Christ.

A daughter of the Augustinian spiritual family, she found in the Cross the clearest expression of the love of Jesus. Her life was marked by prayer, penance, charity, and a profound contemplation of Christ crucified.

For St. Clare, the Cross was never simply something to endure. It was a place to encounter Love Himself.

Today, may her witness lead us to ask:

Is Christ truly at the center of my heart?

May we learn from St. Clare to seek Him in prayer, remain faithful in suffering, and love Him with an undivided heart.
